Wendell Young IV
UFCW 1776KS President
To All UFCW 1776KS Members:

Before providing an update on the COVID-19 pandemic, I want to wish every mother a safe, healthy and Happy Mother’s Day. I like to remind people that a little more than half of our 35,000 members are women and I have met many, many moms among our union family!

Please have a great day.

As Governors in our jurisdiction begin to relax stay at home orders and other restrictions, I am writing to urge all of you to take every precaution possible to keep yourself, your family, and your co-workers safe throughout the COVID-19 crisis.

COVID-19 is still a very real threat, especially to our members who are essential workers in food and meat processing, retail, healthcare, and the public sector.
Wash your hands. Practice social distancing. Follow all workplace safety protocols. Do not go to work if you have any COVID-19 symptoms. Respect barriers that provide space between you and co-workers or at grocery stores.

COVID-19 is still here, and we cannot drop our guard. Our Local has already paid a steep price: as of today, this disease has killed seven of our members, and 656 of our brothers and sisters have contracted COVID-19. These are sobering numbers and I am asking that you pray for these families and our members.

We continue to fight hard to keep you safe.

Our work with Governor Tom Wolf, among other elected leaders, has resulted in executive orders mandating stronger workplace safety and cleaning protocols. We are now making sure that employers follow these protocols. We worked with many employers to secure bonus or ‘hero’ pay for thousands of our members who have worked throughout this crisis. We have also worked with employers across the Local to develop expanded sick time and leave policies to protect your rights.

Please visit our COVID-19 Resource Center for the latest information about your workplace. Make sure to scroll down the page to find your employer.

We will not stop fighting for you, but I need your help. Please stay safe. Call your Union Representative immediately if you are concerned that your employer is not following all safety and cleaning protocols. Use our toll-free number: 866.329.1776.

Thank you, again, for your hard and dedication. I have never been prouder to represent the 35,000 members of UFCW Local 1776KS.
