Kitty News You Can Use
Early Spring means early bugs... Kittys and coronavirus... New Kitty Valet Service... Kitten Academy Graduation
|
|
In March, Spring will officially arrive, but these unseasonably warm temperatures have fooled the spring bulbs and the creepy crawlers into an early arrival. If your kitty does not have year round protection, now is the time to protect them. And, please remember that indoor cats are also vulnerable to many pest invasions. We offer many pest control options and make recommendations based on your pet's age, overall health, lifestyle and other pets.
In our annual exams we check for evidence of pests and conduct fecal exams for internal parasites. Last season we had a case where a cat had a sensitivity to mosquitoes and had developed scabs on her ears. We have seen systemic disease produced by tick bites, and the fleas... there's always fleas!
Keep your feline friend pest free! Call or visit our website to schedule an appointment for personally tail-ored flea, tick and heartworm services at Aristokatz - we can guide you based on your kitty's lifestyle, age and health.

Cats and Coronavirus - Facts from the CDC
|
Key Points
- Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses. Some cause illness in people and others cause illness in certain types of animals.
- Coronaviruses that infect animals can become able to infect people, but this is rare.
- We do not know the exact source of the current outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
- We do not have evidence that companion animals, including pets, can spread COVID-19.
- We do not have evidence to suggest that imported animals or animal products imported pose a risk for spreading the 2019 novel coronavirus in the United States.
Risk to pets
CDC has not received any reports of pets or other animals becoming sick with COVID-19. Further studies are needed to understand if and how different animals could be affected by COVID-19.
How to protect pets if you are sick
If you are sick with COVID-19 (either suspected or confirmed), you should restrict contact with pets and other animals, just like you would around other people. Although there have not been reports of pets or other animals becoming sick with COVID-19, it is still recommended that people sick with COVID-19 limit contact with animals until more information is known about the virus. This can help ensure both you and your animals stay healthy.
When possible, have another member of your household care for your animals while you are sick. Avoid contact with your pet including: petting, snuggling, being kissed or licked, and sharing food. If you must care for your pet or be around animals while you are sick, wash your hands before and after you interact with them.

Our second annual Valentine's Give Back was another success! We so appreciated the many donations you generously brought it. That catch and release organizations we partner with were delighted. And, it's so much fun to see everyone's beloved kitty's pictures gracing our wall. It was fun to use our new Polaroid to capture a patient pic!

Kamper of the Month - Leo
The best office cat wannabe ever!
|
|
Leo is a frequent Kamper who we adore - and so does Jeorge!
He is completely comfortable when he comes to stay and makes himself at home in the back office, at the front desk, or anywhere else he can wander to. He is super friendly to Jeorge, who can be "particular" about his playmates.
As you can see, he stands at attention when it's dinnertime!

Medical Mystery of the Month - Coby
All vaccines are not created equal
|
|
Before you read this month’s mystery, I want to emphasize how vitally important it is that we all continue to vaccinate our cats for diseases that can be deadly. If we don’t, we will certainly see some terrible health implications for our beloved pets. After you read the story about Coby, I will explain the difference between vaccines that we use in our clinic and the ones that have been identified to potentially cause issues.
Coby
Coby came to see me because he had a very large swelling on his front leg that extended from his shoulder all the way down to his paw. It was not impacting his stride but the owners knew it had to be a problem. When I examined Coby, he seemed to not even notice there was a problem as he continued to act and walk normally.
Before we scheduled surgery to remove as much of the lump as possible, we had to do the necessary pre-operative testing. This includes bloodwork to check for any metabolic abnormalities and Xrays to make sure there has been no spread of disease elsewhere in the body. Coby passed with flying colors.
In surgery, I removed as much of the mass as possible. Since it was all along his leg, I had to be careful to retain enough tissue to close the wound. While Coby was home recovering, we had to wait patiently for the pathology results...

Update on Online Pharmacy Policy
|
|
As a convenience to clients we have worked with online pharmacies directly on behalf of patients. Unfortunately, it has become increasingly difficult to work with them effectively, and miscommunications and challenges regarding timely communications have led us to decide to discontinue dealing with them directly. We will be happy to give you written prescriptions that you can fulfill as you wish, and will ok refills if they are phoned in by an outside pharmacy, but we will no longer accept or respond to faxes sent to us by any outside pharmacy. Thank you for your understanding!
