Changes to the Faculty's leadership team

Gordon Smith, Vice-Dean (Faculty Relations), Faculty of Arts and Science, is stepping down from his role on June 30 and Lynda Jessup, Associate Dean (Strategic Initiatives), has been named the new Vice-Dean (Faculty Relations) effective Thursday, July 1.

Gordon went above and beyond in his tenure with the Faculty of Arts and Science. He worked tirelessly to advance faculty priorities and allowed FAS to offer the best possible experience for our faculty, staff, and students - in particular, his important work in the development and implementation of the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts and many Indigenization efforts. FAS is grateful for the dedication he has shown.

William Nelson has been appointed Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) to commence Thursday, July 1. Dr. Nelson is currently an Associate Professor in Biology. He has been involved with a number of curriculum and course design initiatives, including leading our faculty's largest multidisciplinary project to develop an introductory blended statistics course, both as an instructor and Undergraduate Chair.

Jill Atkinson will be serving as Associate Dean (Academic) from Thursday, July 1 to Thursday, December 30 while Associate Dean Jenn Stephenson takes a six-month sabbatical.
mfaNew staff members required to enrol in Multi-Factor Authentication

Last year, the university implemented multi-factor authentication (MFA) to improve cybersecurity at Queen's. In addition to a username and password, MFA prompts users for another form of authentication before logging in to specific services. It acts as an additional form of proof of digital identity to help ensure only authorized users can access an account. By now, many users are familiar with this requirement in their personal online transactions.

By the end of July 2021, enrolment in multi-factor authentication (MFA) will be required for all staff members* to access Microsoft Office 365 applications (including Queen's email). This is required to help protect Queen's network and systems from cybersecurity threats.

*Some authorized custodial and trades staff are exempted from this timeline and will be enrolled later in 2021.

What This Means For Staff:

Starting Tuesday, July 6, staff members who are not yet enrolled in MFA will be prompted to do so at each log in to most Queen's applications. These prompts will continue for up to 14 days with no consequence. If after 14 days the staff member still has not enrolled into MFA, they will lose access to Office 365 applications, including Queen's email.

If staff members request a hardware token and indicate in the request that they are receiving prompts to enrol for MFA, enrolment prompts will pause while the hardware token request is processed. Staff members will not be required to enrol for MFA until a token is received and can be activated.

If you or your staff members have issues enrolling in MFA, pleasecontact the IT Support Centre by visiting the online Service Portal. See the IT Services website for hours.
heakthyHealthy Communities updates

Healthy Communities events continued last week with a customized Stress Reduction webinar from LifeWorks (recording coming soon to the Healthy Communities webpage) which helped participants gain practical tools to manage stress and communicate more mindfully.

Customized Healthy Communities opportunities for FAS staff and faculty will continue over the summer, beginning with a positive psychology workshop on Wednesday, July 14. "PERMA: A Model for Psychological and Social Well-Being" will help participants concentrate on those things that allow us to create more meaningful, fulfilling and satisfying lives. Spaces limited - Learn more and register today!

On Tuesday, July 27, Queen's Hospitality Services' Registered Dietitian, Jessica Bertrand, will provide "An Introduction to Healthy Eating". This one-hour webinar will be the first in a two-part nutrition series designed with FAS staff and faculty feedback in mind. Learn more and register here .
seesDeveloping a Strategy for Excellence, Equity and Enrichment in Service

In light of fast-growing and diversifying demands on staff, the faculty is developing a Strategy for Excellence, Equity & Enrichment in Service (SEEES).
  • In alignment with the FAS Strategic Plan, this project aims to ensure a more equitable and consistent approach to service and support across FAS departments while maintaining current staffing levels and providing increased professional development opportunities for staff. Learn more.
  • There will be numerous opportunities for both FAS faculty and staff to provide input over the coming months. As a vital preliminary step in understanding emerging challenges and opportunities within our faculty from an administrative perspective, we're asking staff to complete this staff survey by Friday, July 9 for one of five chances to win some Tricolour Outlet swag.
  • Survey responses will help to prioritize next steps for focus groups and solutions development - don't miss this chance for your voice to be heard.
If you have questions about the staff survey or the SEEES project, please contact Maryanne Wainman, Project Manager, Organizational Design [email protected].
