JCPS Moves to NTI on Tuesday, January 11
No School for Students on Monday, January 10
January 9, 2022 - Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) will transition to Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) this week due to staffing shortages related to COVID-19. There will be no school for students and teachers on Monday, January 10. NTI will begin on Tuesday, January 11 and will continue through at least Friday, January 14 for all students in JCPS. If our staffing levels return to a point that we can safely operate school, our scheduled return to in-person instruction will be Tuesday, January 18. This follows the Monday after the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. We will continue to keep families informed of any changes.
With a reduced number of staff available to work in our schools, JCPS is unable to operate our school buildings and is making the temporary switch to remote learning. This time will allow our staff to recover from COVID and complete quarantines and isolations. While we don’t anticipate this being a prolonged period of NTI, we ask families to be flexible as our community continues to see more cases of the Omicron variant increase. According to state law, our district has a maximum of 10 NTI days to use for the remainder of the school year.
We know you may have questions about what NTI will look like at your student’s school. Principals will be sharing a message with families about what to expect when we begin learning virtually on Tuesday. This message will include your child’s schedule, instructions on using Google classroom, and additional information unique to your school. Curbside meal distribution will be available to families during NTI. Here is a list of locations that will operate from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for meal distribution on Tuesday and Thursday.
Moving to NTI is the result of staffing shortages connected to COVID-19 that make it difficult to conduct school. These shortages are not expected to impact athletics or extracurricular activities. Those activities may continue as long as staff is available to oversee those limited events. COVID-19 mitigation strategies will continue to be followed. If there are any changes for scheduled extracurricular activities, your school will communicate with you.
The well-being of our students and staff has been at the center of our decision making process every step of the way throughout COVID-19. We want our students to be healthy and prepared to succeed. This time of remote instruction will allow us to get closer to those goals. We’ve been through change in the past and we’ll get through this adjustment by remaining committed to our students.
