Voting Registration and Voter's List

Many seasonal residents have been dropped.

There are challenges this year with the voter list for our Township. In prior years MCAP has provided the list to municipalities. This made sense as MPAC has all the properties identified for tax valuation puposes. The issue is that MPAC has not done property assessments since 2016. The norm is to do an assessment every 4 years, but with Covid and the dramatic increase in some property values, the decision was made to delay new assessments until the "bubble" corrected. The upshot is that MPAC does not have a current list of property owners.

Thus, Elections Ontario is providing the voters list to municipalities. The difficulty is that, in a provincial election, a person can only vote in one jurisdiction (we can call it their home base). Many of our seasonal residents will have designated their full time property as their jurisdiction for the Ontario elections (say Toronto, London).

Thus, Elections Ontario may have no record of seasonal property owners in Muskoka.

The Muskoka Lakes Association has created a great informational document which clearly explains how to check and get on the voter's list. It also includes a FAQ section.

Garbage "Rules" Are a Challenge

I would like to update this section from my last newsletter as there is confusion around the simple phrase "garbage collection". I will practice the KISS (Keep It Simple and Smile??) principle here.
The new program applies to weekly pick-up and waste taken to land transfer stations:
  • green/black garbage bags are NOT allowed to be used for anything, anywhere, anytime
  • All recycling has to be in blue transparent bags and or bins (this has not changed)
  • Recycling does not need to be sorted - all in the same bag/bin
  • Household garbage has to be in clear transparent bags
  • Household garbage can contain 2 small opaque privacy bags (grocery bag size)
  • 1 household bag is allowed per week - no oversized or contractor bags

The Township Waste App is a terrific resource. It is available from your App store. You can customize it to your address to get the schedules.

The Wizard has hundreds of products that can be "pulled up" to learn of the appropriate disposal.
