Dear Sunshine Elementary Staff and Parents:

As you know, construction has been ongoing at Sunshine Elementary for the past year. Unfortunately, while the work was scheduled for completion in time for the 2020-2021 school year to begin, the project has not yet been finished. To provide the best possible learning environment while construction continues, school will begin on August 24 at the former Portland Elementary building, 906 W. Portland St.

Temporary use of the Portland campus will ensure our students and staff have access to a fully-operational school facility while providing an opportunity for the contractor to complete the Sunshine project. In support of this contingency plan, construction of the new Jarrett Middle School on the current Portland campus has been temporarily delayed.

Bus transportation will be provided to all those students who are newly eligible. Please know that detailed information will be provided to each family very soon. In the meantime, please contact the SPS transportation office at 523-0500 with specific questions.

While we are disappointed by the need to make this adjustment to our plans, we know that it will be worth it in the end. The renovated and expanded Sunshine Elementary will represent an extraordinary transformation and will serve our community for generations. In the meantime, a vast majority of our students and staff are familiar with the Portland campus and we will do everything possible to make each individual feel welcomed.

We look forward to celebrating the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new facility very soon. Between now and then, we continue to #shineunited.

Please feel free to reach out to me directly with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,

Dr. Tracy Daniels
