Celebrate Black History Month at DVC

Book club
February 1 - 28 the DVC Library is hosting a book club: The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. Books will be provided.

Aisha Fukushima
On Wednesday, February 20 from 12:45-2:10 pm in the PAC, we present "Rise by Lifting - The world is y/ours: Reflections of a global RAPtivisit" with Aisha Fukushima. Fukushima is the founder of RAPtivism (Rap Activism), a hip hop project spanning 20 countries and four continents, amplifying universal efforts for freedom and justice. She is a multilingual, multiracial African American Japanese woman who lectures and performs from the United States to France, Morocco, Japan, Germany, England, South Africa, Senegal, India, Denmark, and beyond. 

Race in America: Umoja Students Speak
On Thursday, February 28 from 12:30-1:30 pm in the Student Union Conference Center, we present "Race in America: Umoja Students Speak" featuring Umoja students discussing race relations and education in America and their experiences being African American students at DVC.

Manufacturing Job Expo/Open House 
Students – job seekers – apprentice candidates: Bay area employers are looking for you! Have you thought about a highly paid, rewarding career making today’s high-tech products? Are you mechanically, electronically curious? Maybe you took that first design or machining class and are wondering – is this the right career for me? 

Come and tour the shop, learn about what classes we offer, meet employers, and run the jet engine on Wednesday March 13 , 4–7:30 pm at the ET Building.
Message from Police Services
Please take the time to consider the following safety tips while going about your daily routine, and share them with your friends: 

  • Never leave any items of value unattended. 
  • Always check to make sure your vehicle has been locked and secured. 
  • If you need to leave a room, office, or classroom, take your belongings with you or ask a friend or colleague to keep an eye on them for you… even if you are only going to be gone a minute.
  • Never leave your office unattended without locking. If you need help securing an office or lab, contact Police Services immediately for assistance.
  • Do not leave items of value out in “plain view”. This would include items such as: bags, purses, laptops, wallets, etc. Whether in your vehicle or office, secure items of value away so they are not left out in the open. 
  • Always be aware of your surroundings. If you notice anything or anyone suspicious, contact Police Services for assistance. We can be reached at (925) 686-5547.

Following these tips can help you stay safe. Use them as a guide of just a few of the many things you can do to take more personal responsibility for your safety while on campus . .

Get ready for transferring in STEM!
If you are majoring in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and are planning on transferring this fall, come to the DVC STEM alumni panel from 4–6 pm on Tuesday, March 26 at the Pleasant Hill Campus (in the Diablo Room) or Thursday, March 28 at the San Ramon Campus (in E229). Get advice and tips from former DVC students who have successfully transferred to UCs and CSUs, including UC Davis, UC Berkeley, SFSU and more! Our STEM alumni are prepared to give you valuable tips and lessons learned from their experiences. There will also be time for you to ask your own burning questions, so come with a few! Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.
Student Graduate Speaker Application Period: 1/31 - 3/29
The student graduate speaker offers an address during the commencement ceremony in May and serves as the representative of the entire graduating class. Providing the student address during this important college event is an opportunity for the selected student to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduating class, reflect upon the past few years, and convey a message for the future. 

Please refer to the Student Graduate Speaker Application for eligibility criteria. Applications must be submitted to the Office of the Vice President of Student Services in the Administration Building no later than 5pm on Friday, March 29 .
Available classes
The spring term at DVC officially starts in late January, but not all classes start at the same time. Many late start and short term classes begin throughout the semester. Check out the lists of face-to-face, partially online, and fully online classes still available at DVC. Get started any time. 
DVC College Success Workshops
Student success workshops are carefully designed to sharpen your skills, introduce you to support resources on campus, and provide you with tips and tricks for making each semester successful. Disability Support Services (DSS) can help you

Do you have trouble:

  • taking notes in class,
  • finishing tests before time runs out,
  • keeping up with your reading, or
  • navigating campus?

If so, the Disability Support Services office may be able to help. DSS serves students with many kinds of disabilities: physical, learning, psychological, etc. It provides many students with extended time on tests, note taking assistance, books in audible formats, transportation on campus, tutoring, and many other services.

To qualify, you need only provide verification of a disability, such as an IEP or 504 plan from high school, a doctor's note, or other official documentation.

Cal Fresh is a federal nutrition program helping people with low incomes buy more food and improve their diets. Each person who is eligible may qualify for up to $200 per month.

DVC Food Pantry
The DVC Food Pantry is located in the Multicultural Center on the first floor of the Student Union. We provide free foods to students in need. The NEW extended pantry hours are Monday - Thursday, 10:30am-6pm.

Student Ambassadors provide peer support and perform 
a variety of fun and important jobs at DVC, such as:

  • Leading campus tours 
  • Giving presentations to prospective students and their parents
  • Using social media to connect with future students

UC TAG and Transfer 101
Want to learn how to transfer to one of several UC schools with a transfer admission guarantee (TAG) agreement? Attend the UC TAG and Transfer 101 workshop on Wednesday, March 13 from 12 - 1pm, in W137, to learn how.

Priority deadline for 2019-20 FAFSA
If you haven't already started, go to www.fafsa.gov and submit your application by the priority deadline of Saturday, March 2.

New placement process coming next fall
If you have not yet taken English or math at DVC, you need to know that we are changing the placement requirements for these core classes beginning fall 2019. Counseling appointments
Achieving success begins with a plan. Now is a great time to meet with a counselor to develop an educational plan or revise your existing one for the upcoming summer and fall terms. When you make an education plan with a counselor, you create a road map of classes you will take each semester. This roadmap prevents you from taking unnecessary courses and can help you save time and money. Schedule an appointment online or at the Counseling Services in the Student Services Building.

Deadline reminders
Students who are earning an AA/AS/ADT degree at the end of spring MUST apply for it no later than Friday, March 1 . Complete the Petition for the AA/AS degree - It is very easy to complete and free!
DVC Connect Card
Do you have your DVC ID and ASDVC discount sticker? Go to the Student Union to get both. The library also provides black and white ID cards, and the Book Store sells the discount sticker for $10, so you can get five percent off of your purchases there. Visit DVC Connect Card for more information.
Educational Talent Search and Upward Bound seeks paid tutors for the summer
We are seeking tutors to help middle and high school students at DVC and local schools. Tutors must travel to school sites. 

Tutors for math needed Mondays and Tuesdays from 8:30-10:20am and/or 10:30am-12:20pm. Tutors for English needed Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-10:20am, 10:30am-12:20pm and/or 1-3pm. Tutors for coding needed Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8:30-10:20am, and 10:30am-12:20pm.

CalWORKs  announcements
Are you interested in FREE parking, books and educational supplies? Are you a student parent receiving TANF/county cash aid for both you and your child or children? If so, join DVC’s CalWORKs program for spring 2019. Stop by or contact the CalWORKs Office for more information about eligibility and services. 

CalWORKs orientations
CalWORKs orientations are being scheduled now for spring 2019 Come to the CalWORKs Office to pick up an application package and schedule an orientation date. Orientation is a CalWORKs mandatory requirement for each semester of student participation.
Please be a good neighbor and consider our neighborhood
Help us preserve DVC's excellent reputation by doing your part to be a good neighbor! We understand that our students sometimes have to park on neighborhood streets at the beginning of the term when campus parking is harder to find. But don't forget to try our new car drop-off service when the parking spots are hard to find. If you do park off campus, please show respect for our neighbors by doing your part to keep their streets clean, quiet, and peaceful!

Smoke Free DVC
Diablo Valley College is now a Tobacco-Free Institution
DVC is committed to promoting the good health of our students, staff and broader community by providing a healthy environment in which to learn and work. Given the negative health impacts of tobacco and similar product use, the Governing Board has established policy (GBP #2045) designating DVC as a tobacco-free institution. Therefore: 
Smoking, smoking substitutes, smoke inducing devices and vaping are considered a health hazard and are prohibited on all college property. This includes, but is not limited to, products containing tobacco or nicotine, e-cigarettes, cigars, clove cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, snuff, chew packets, hookah smoking, personal vaporizers/electronic smoking devices, marijuana and controlled substances regulated under federal law. 

This policy shall apply to all students, employees, volunteers, vendors, consultants, agents, contractors, and visitors on Diablo Valley College property as defined above. Consistent with Government Code 7597.1, the Governing Board has imposed fines and set enforcement standards for DVC in order to ensure a tobacco-free environment.

Marijuana policy at DVC
Recreational marijuana is legal in California, but it is still prohibited on all Contra Costa Community College District property, colleges and campuses.
Policy on skateboarding, skating, and bicycling on campus
In accordance with V.C. 21113(f), the use of bicycles, motorized bicycles, electric bicycles, skateboards, electrically motorized boards, and roller skates on the DVC campus is strictly prohibited.
