Drone as First Responder Program Begins Trial in Washington County

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office has launched a pilot Drone as First Responder (DFR) program designed to provide deputies with real-time aerial information during certain high-priority calls. The program uses FAA-licensed pilots and department-owned drones to help assess scenes more quickly, improve situational awareness, and support safer responses for both deputies and the community.

“This technology helps us respond more safely and efficiently while staying grounded in our commitment to community trust,” said Sheriff Caprice Massey.

Following the trial period, Sheriff’s Office leadership will evaluate the program’s effectiveness and determine whether expanded use is appropriate.
