What's Going On ??

Do Your Lights Dim When Your Air Conditioner Turns On?

If you've noticed your lights flicker or dim every time your air conditioner starts, you're not alone. While it can be annoying, it doesn't always mean there's something wrong with your electrical system.

Our first step is to inspect your home's electrical system to make sure everything is operating safely and correctly.

Sometimes, however, the cause isn't inside your home at all. Homes located farther from the neighborhood transformer can experience a larger voltage drop when a high-demand appliance like an air conditioner starts.

In many cases, installing an A/C Soft Start is an excellent solution. A Soft Start significantly reduces the large surge of electricity your air conditioner needs during startup, helping to:

  • Reduce or eliminate dimming lights
  • Lower stress on your electrical system and air conditioner
  • Improve overall system performance
  • Make it easier to operate your air conditioner when using backup power or a generator

If your lights dim every time your A/C starts, don't ignore it. Let us evaluate the cause and recommend the right solution for your home.

Summer Heat Can Slow EV Charging

If your EV charges more slowly during hot weather, don't panic. Many vehicles and chargers automatically reduce charging speeds to protect themselves from excessive heat.

Here are a few ways to help keep charging reliable during the summer:

1) Loosen up the cable.

  • Avoid wrapping the charging cable tightly around the charger. Heat can become trapped between the loops.

2) Use the garage floor.

  • After charging, lay the cable loosely on the concrete floor. The concrete can help absorb heat and cool the cable.

3) Charge overnight.

  • The coolest hours are typically after midnight through early morning. Your charger, vehicle, and battery will all run cooler.

4) Lower the charging amperage.

  • If you have plenty of time to charge, reducing the charging rate can significantly reduce heat buildup while still delivering a full battery by morning.

5) Watch for repeated warnings.

  • An occasional charging slowdown during a heat wave is normal. Frequent thermal warnings or charging interruptions may indicate a problem that should be inspected.

A little heat management can go a long way toward keeping your EV charging safely and reliably all summer long.

Is Your Electric

Vehicle Charged?

Start each day with a full charge. Investing in an EV charger will save you time. Thinking of adding a second EV to your home? Let's talk about electric load and needing a second charger.

Main Electrical Panel

If tripping breakers are a common occurrence, your electrical panel could be damaged. Outdated or overwhelmed electrical panels are the main cause of electrical fires. Your panel may also need to be upgraded to install an EV charger. But no worries, we can help.
