VCNP president Dr. Olivia Newby and Tidewater Region member Dr. Lawanda Wood volunteered with Habitat for Humanity's Women's Build Week this spring.
The poet Maya Angelou wrote, “You may write me down in history with your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt but still, like dust, I’ll rise.” I shared this sentiment during the annual membership meeting in March and asked each of you, “How will you rise?”
As NPs we have so many opportunities to impact our patients and our communities – and you’ve told us you want to do more. We’ve heard you and are compiling a listing of volunteer opportunities across the state so you can rise up and make an impact. Check out our new volunteer opportunities site. If you know of other areas where NPs can help, please share them with staff.
The time is now – to rise up and be strong, to rise up and be heard, to rise up and seen!

Get to know your legislators
VCNP Blue Ridge president, Judy Jenks, brought students to Richmond this winter to meet Delegate Dawn Adams and visit VCNP offices.
It’s primary season, and this fall all 40 seats in the Senate and 100 seats in the House of Delegates will be up for election in Virginia. VCNP’s Government Relations committee is continuing to promote NP practice by reaching out to legislators and candidates.
You can help too! Are you volunteering with election campaigns? Are you attending events in your area? Sign up for legislator and candidate email lists so you’re aware of what’s going on. Let us know how you’re getting involved and how we can support you. Contact staff.
