As of July 1, Virginia medical marijuana patients no longer need to register with state regulators before they can buy marijuana products from a licensed medical dispensary. Patients still need a prescription, or certificate, from a health care provider who’s registered with the commonwealth to prescribe cannabis.
The state budget includes a new penalty for marijuana possession, making it a misdemeanor to carry more than four ounces of cannabis but less than a pound in public.
Localities with fewer than 40,000 residents are now able to opt out of the “Marcus Alert” law, which requires localities to implement a system requiring mental health professionals to join law enforcement when responding to incidents where people are experiencing a mental health crisis.
