VCNP announces award winners
Congratulations to this year’s VCNP award winners for their outstanding contributions as NPs. Awards were announced at conference.

Jennifer Breseman, DNP, FNP-BC, received the Rising Star Award, which is presented to a VCNP member who has been an NP for less than five years but exhibits qualities of leadership that would be expected of a more seasoned individual. Jennifer started her involvement with VCNP as a student prior to obtaining her DNP. She served in the student board position where she created a local preceptor award to honor VCNP members who serve as preceptors to students in the Northern Virginia region. Since her graduation, she has continued to volunteer on VCNP’s Northern Virginia Region board as co-chair of the Education Committee. Jennifer is a family NP with Leesburg Sterling Family Practice.

Helen Willis, MSN, ACNP-BC, CCRN, was honored with the Education Award for outstanding contributions to NPs in the areas of education and patient care. Helen has served as VCNP’s Education committee chair for three years and is responsible for planning the association’s annual 4-day conference as well as assisting regional chairs in coordinating local programs. She has held multiple positions on VCNP’s Richmond Region board including president and education committee chair. Helen works as an NP in the cardiothoracic surgery department at Henrico Doctor’s Hospital where she also serves as a preceptor to many NP students each year.

Blue Ridge Area Food Bank shares thanks
|
|
VCNP partnered with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank during this year’s conference. Sarah Mallan, the food bank’s community engagement coordinator, sent this note of thanks.

“You really hit it out of the park with raising $2,104.55, the equivalent of 8,418 meals, during the VCNP drive! This is one of the top 10 drives this past year but what’s more important is that you are creating hope for our communities. When students are nourished, they are able to better learn. When an aging individual has food they can prepare and consume, we know their health improves. You’re helping a mother have some peace of mind because she is able to feed her children and herself. On behalf of those we serve – thank you.”
-Sarah Mallan, Community Engagement Coordinator

As I shared in my opening speech at conference last week, there is a time for everything and a season for every activity. This analogy of time represents a cord of three threads – empowerment, equality and equity. As NPs, we have many challenges and opportunities ahead of us including becoming stronger, pushing for equality and providing care to all Virginians. This is our time to build. This is our time to speak. This is our time to plant our future. I’m looking forward to this time with you.
