New Mobile Recording Studio & Online Video Toolkit

Improve Your Online Instruction with Quality Videos

A mobile recording studio is the latest of CELT’s innovative solutions serving Iowa State’s online students.

As the Department of Statistics develops its new Master of Applied Statistics online program, faculty now have the benefit of a recording studio in Snedecor Hall.

For online classes, CELT Media Production Manager Andrew Sevcik said videos made intentionally in a studio geared toward online instruction are best for the student experience.

“It provides that step up in quality from (instructors) sitting in their home or office recording on Zoom, Webex or Canvas Studio,” Media Production Specialist Kyle Solberg said.

CELT's New Video in Online Courses Toolkit Provides Video Guidance for Online Instructors

Released this week, the ten-page toolkit is packed with helpful, researched, actionable information on how quality video content impacts students, and how instructors can create it.

The toolkit explores best practices such as creating “micro-lectures”; tips on video length and structure; ideas to amplify engagement; and much more.

CELT’s Media Production Team, contacted via celt-help@iastate.edu, offers individual consultations to instructors.

The CELT Course Design Institute (CDI) gives Iowa State University’s instructors skills, time, and space for designing or substantially revising their courses. CDI resources and discussions explore the concepts of backward and accessible course design, assessments, and activities. Instructor participants will re-design at least two modules in their Canvas course using the new ISU Canvas course template. Participants must also complete a Quality Matters self-review to receive a $500 professional development award. All participants will receive feedback and instructional design assistance throughout CDI.

Participant Requirements:

  • Attend four synchronous online meetings: May 15, 22, 29 & June 5
  • Engage in an online asynchronous course from May 1 – July 31
  • Redesign at least two Canvas modules using the ISU Canvas course template
  • Meet with CELT team members for consultation and as-needed support
  • Complete a Quality Matters self-review
  • Attend summer teaching technology online training sessions and Quality Matter online workshop (Optional)

CELT will give preference to instructors of large-enrollment courses (courses with 50 or more students) and to instructors who have not participated in previous CDI sessions. All disciplines are welcome and encouraged to participate.

If interested, please review the CDI Summer 2024 MOU and complete the CDI Summer 2024 Registration Form (Microsoft Forms) to participate. The form will open on April 4 and close on April 24. Participants will be notified of acceptance and added to the Canvas course by May 1.

Miller Open Education Mini-Grants

Return with New Funding Track

The Miller Open Education Mini-Grant Program provides funding for instructors to adopt, edit, or create open educational resources (OER), free instructional materials that can be customized to fit specific course needs. The goal of the Mini-Grant Program is to encourage pedagogical innovation by providing instructors with the time and resources they need to redesign their courses around the use of OER.

The call for proposals closes at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, April 15, 2024.

The 2024 call includes a new track for original publications that relate to the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals, a strategic priority area for the ISU Digital Press. You can learn more about this new track and the application process on the Mini-Grant Program website.

The Miller Open Education Mini-Grant Program is co-funded by the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), the Iowa State University Library, and the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost (SVPP).
