IMPROVING FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

AND REPORTING TASK FORCE

RE: Improving Financial Management and Reporting Task Force Update

To: Faculty and Staff

January 30, 2024

Colleagues,

We are writing to provide you with an update on our efforts to address the campus’ financial reporting needs in response to Chancellor Muñoz’s call to action last year. The joint senate-administration task force is meeting weekly and has identified three emerging areas of focus. The task force has convened sub-groups to investigate each of these areas and provide recommendations for a first phase of solutions and improvements which we anticipate will be implemented by the end of the semester. These sub-groups and their topical areas are:

Payroll Accuracy and Timeliness – Co-leads Interim EVC/Provost Marjorie Zatz and Charlie Eaton, Professor of Sociology

“Inflow” and Front-end Process Improvements – Co-leads VC/CIO Nick Dugan and Tao Ye, Professor of Chemistry

Financial Reporting Improvements and Delivery – Co-leads VCR Gillian Wilson and Kara McCloskey, Professor of Materials Science and Engineering

Each sub-group is comprised of subject matter experts across UC Merced divisions and charged with identifying opportunities for both short- and long-term improvements to their respective areas. The task force is on track to receive these recommendations from the sub-groups and assemble them into a comprehensive plan which will be executed through the spring semester. We anticipate being able to share this plan with the campus by late February or early March.

Thank you for your patience, support, and candid feedback as we work to deliver the continued improvements and enhancements to our financial systems and processes that the campus needs to meet its strategic goals. We look forward to providing continued updates on our plans and progress throughout the spring.

Sincerely,
