With Natural Awakening, long-term care communities minimize noise and other disturbances at night to help residents get a full night of sleep. Residents can choose to sleep in, or to receive a wake-up call based on their preferences.

Listen to the recorded Gardenside webinar to hear Deb Sutton, RN, BS, NHA discuss practical approaches to implementing Natural Awakening based on her experience at Jefferson Community Health and Life – Gardenside LTC, in Fairbury, Nebraska.
“As a result of this effort to facilitate natural awakening, Gardenside has experienced a decrease in falls, antipsychotic medication use and infection rates.” - Krystal Hays, DNP, RN, RAC-CT ; Great Plains QIN Quality Improvement Advisor
Why Natural Awakening?
Explore more about mobility, infections, and antipsychotic medication use and resources that are available for each on the NNHQI Campaign website under Clinical Outcome Goals.
Gardenside’s Natural Awakening program was based on a similar intervention implemented at nursing homes that are part of Empira, a consortium of nursing home owners in Minnesota. Listen to the Empira webinar for more ideas for improving sleep in your community, including tips for “snooze foods,” repositioning schedules, aromatherapy, and more.
" That is a 50% reduction in the falls in one year from our sleep program ."
- Sue Ann Guildermann, RN, BA, MA ; Director of Education, Empira
The NNHQI Campaign is always striving to get to know our participants better in order to provide the tools and resources that will be most helpful in supporting continuous quality improvement. As we work to build these important relationships, we thought it would be just as valuable for our participants to get to know us as well!

Check out the Meet Our Team page to learn more about each of our staff members, including their areas of focus on the NNHQI Campaign.
The National Healthcare Safety Network’s (NHSN) Annual Training for Long Term Care Communities will cover various topics such as antibiotic stewardship, data analysis, and surveillance for urinary tract infections, C. difficile, and multi-drug resistant organisms. The NHSN user support team will be available to assist users with onsite enrollment, updating CCNs, adding and deactivating users, and other application questions and hands-on troubleshooting.
Please email with training related questions.
SAMS staff will be available onsite to assist with SAMS registration, identity proofing, and grid card issuance. This will be a great opportunity for new staff to receive personal assistance and quickly receive a SAMS grid card for NHSN access.
