Learning to read as an adult is hard. It is even harder if you can't clearly see the words on the page.
When Karen La Forge
Executive Director of The READ Center, realized that some of her students were struggling with their vision, she reached out to the MEDARVA Foundation looking for help.
In turn, MEDARVA reached out to CrossOver's Vision Program to see what we could do.
Two weeks ago, vision program manager Karen Bosley and Eye Technician Rebbecca Weathered went to an evening reading class at The Read Center. There they provided basic vision screenings for some of the students. Karen and Rebecca found that three of the students needed to be seen by an Ophthalmologist for further testing and referred them to resources.
In the coming weeks, Karen Bosley will be attending staff meetings at The READ Center to train their teachers to perform basic vision screenings to identify students whose eye sight is hindering their ability to read.
We are excited to partner with The MEDARVA Foundation and The READ Center to bring clearer vision and increased literacy to our neighbors in need.
