Dear Daniels Customer
This Just In...
Christmas is here.
So is Hanukkah.
We're also celebrating Kwanzaa and Yule and, naturally, Festivus (for the rest of us).
We hope that whatever holiday you celebrate, whatever is on your table - or whoever is around it - that your days are filled with joy, peace and happiness and that tolerance and respect will fill your hearts for the rest of the year.

People love to shop at the holidays. Especially in Europe. The Christmas markets that spring up all over the continent offer an astonishing selection of handmade goods that celebrate the season. Here's a link to a story about those markets. It will give you a chance to plan for next year!

It's that time of year, and classic holiday movies are about to start showing up on cable and will undoubtedly get new, spiffy DVD/Blu-ray box sets.
It's A Wonderful Life will make the rotations on TMC and almost every channel imaginable and will be shown at Trinity College's Cinestudio in late December, the modern family classic
Elf
is always good for some huge laughs, and the darker holiday tale
Scrooged
, with Bill Murray, is a late 80's classic that has improved over time.
One must never forget the indie audience favorite
A Christmas Story, 1947's
Miracle on 34thStreet, the motion capture extravaganzas
The Polar Express and
A Christmas Carol from director Robert Zemeckis.
The underrated
The Family Stone
with a terrific ensemble cast, the perennial favorite Home Alone, Chevy Chase back in his glory years in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, the more naughty than nice and definitely adult-oriented Bad Santa, action masterpiece Die Hard,
the spirited romantic comedies The Holiday and Love Actually, and the adorable family treat The Muppet Christmas Carol. There's no shortage of fun!

Thanksgiving Winners
Bob Daniels congratulated a delighted long time Daniels customer and November winner - Michele H with a turkey and all the fixin's for Thanksgiving.
We wanted to thank all of you who have played along with us this year in our little quizzes. We've had hundreds of correct answers and hope that it has been a little bit of fun along the way. Last month the two women in our quiz were
Marlene Dietrich
and
Sean Young (from Blade Runner)
and the location was, in deed, the
Chunnel!
In November we presented a Turkey and all the fixins' to Marie and Michele just in time for a Thanksgiving feast. We hope to continue this tradition in the future and wish all of you a great holiday season.

Here's what they did in 2014.

So we saw the 4,286th version of The Nutcracker and got to thinking...what's the deal with this thing? It's danced every year by every ballet company on the planet but how did it get its start? Well according to Wikipedia....
The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet, originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The libretto is adapted from E.T.A. Hoffmann's story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. It was given its première at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg on Sunday, December 18, 1892, on a double-bill with Tchaikovsky's opera, Iolanta.
Although the original production was not a success, the 20-minute suite that Tchaikovsky extracted from the ballet was. However, the complete Nutcracker has enjoyed enormous popularity since the late 1960s and is now performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season, especially in the U.S.
Major American ballet companies generate around 40 percent of their annual ticket revenues from performances of The Nutcracker. Tchaikovsky's score has become one of his most famous compositions, in particular the pieces featured in the suite. Among other things, the score is noted for its use of the celesta, an instrument that the composer had already employed in his much lesser known symphonic ballad The Voyevoda.

Mark Twain On Christmas & New Year
We thought we'd share Mr. Clemens' thoughts on the holiday season. Seem as true today as they were 100+ years ago.
"The approach of Christmas brings harassment and dread to many excellent people. They have to buy a cartload of presents, and they never know what to buy to hit the various tastes; they put in three weeks of hard and anxious work, and when Christmas morning comes they are so dissatisfied with the result, and so disappointed that they want to sit down and cry. Then they give thanks that Christmas comes but once a year."
- Following the Equator
"New Year's Day--Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual. Yesterday, everybody smoked his last cigar, took his last drink, and swore his last oath. Today, we are a pious and exemplary community. Thirty days from now, we shall have cast our reformation to the winds and gone to cutting our ancient shortcomings considerably shorter than ever.
We shall also reflect pleasantly upon how we did the same old thing last year about this time. However, go in, community. New Year's is a harmless annual institution, of no particular use to anybody save as a scapegoat for promiscuous drunks, and friendly calls, and humbug resolutions, and we wish you to enjoy it with a looseness suited to the greatness of the occasion."
- Letter to Virginia City Territorial Enterprise, Jan. 1863
Til next month!
