Greetings Friends, Colleagues, and Students –
When we communicated earlier in May, at UMass Boston’s McCormack, we were in the throes of graduation and end-of-year activities. Then, we promised you a second edition of our focus on McCormack’s special role in public service. Now in July, just over a month since we closed out the academic year, it’s a poignant moment to bring you Part 2, highlighting the critical role of public service at our school. That is why in celebrating our graduates and successful faculty, our message for this July edition of McCormack News is to commend the ways that our school is educating the next generation of public intellectuals and public servants.
From the personal to the public, a lot has happened in the span of a month between graduation, Memorial Day, Juneteenth and July 4th! Accompanying our school’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) colleagues on a field trip to the Loeb in Cambridge to watch a matinee performance of the all-female, diverse caste of 1776: The Musical demonstrates how our School’s programming serves to influence our public lives. In the same week, as I introduced UMass Boston alum and former Mayor of the City of Framingham Yvonne Spicer’s keynote address to our Center for Women and Politics’ young women in political leadership summer institute, I was again inspired by Spicer’s call to women to ratchet up their political roles regardless of the careers that they were in.

The John W. McCormack School of Policy and Global Studies celebrated its Graduation Awards Ceremony and Reception on May 25, featuring Representative Jon Santiago as its keynote speaker, who focused his commencement address on “Pathways to Careers in Public Service.”

The John W. McCormack School of Policy and Global Studies has partnered with WUMB Radio to host McCormack Speaks @ WUMB Radio, a series of conversations with McCormack Dean Rita Nkiru ‘Kiki’ Edozie and distinguished guests on topics including town management, public health and COVID-19, U.S.–Africa relations, and Critical Race Theory

At the end of the spring semester, the Chancellor of the University recognized Professor Mark Warren of the Department of Public Policy and Public Affairs as this year’s recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Scholarship.

Associate Professor Eben Weitzman, the Founding Chair of the Department of Conflict Resolution, Human Security, and Global Governance and Director of the Graduate Programs in Conflict Resolution, has been selected for this year’s Faculty Program Director Award for Outstanding Student Mentorship.

Associate Professor Heather MacIndoe of the Department of Public Policy and Public Affairs was awarded a $65,000 grant for her involvement in a national study of nonprofit organizations commissioned by the Independent Sector...

Charla Burnett from the PhD in Global Governance and Human Security program and Maryam Salihu from the PhD in Public Policy program were awarded the Dean’s Public Service Award in recognition of their commitment to public service throughout their time at McCormack. |

Gerontology doctoral students Meghan Hendricksen and Shayna Gleason were recognized for their excellence in scholarship this academic year. Hendricksen and Gleason produced scholarship that deepens the knowledge of older adults’ experiences in our society and fosters opportunities for continued research and interventions.

Tim Cronin, a Master’s in Public Administration program student focusing on Climate Policy, has been awarded this year’s Carol Torto Memorial Scholarship. As part of Africa Day, the John W. McCormack School of Policy and Global Studies and Africa Scholars Forum were proud to host Ambassador Hilda Suka-Mafudze, the Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United States.

As a graduating senior and student in the Accelerated Master’s Program in Gerontology, Kelli Fieldhouse has managed to find a program that honors her home life, caregiving commitments, and academic history. Her studies in gerontology have informed her caregiving for her 88- and 89-year-old grandparents, for whom she is a permanent resident caregiver.

On May 19, Senator Lydia Edwards addressed the 2022 graduates of the Gender, Leadership, and Public Policy (GLPP) program. Sen. Edwards structured her speech as a series of lessons she has learned throughout her career, supplemented by personal and professional stories, including the challenges that she has encountered.

The Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy at UMass Boston denounces and is outraged by Friday's Supreme Court decision on abortion. As a Center that fosters and supports the social, economic, and physical well-being of women and families, particularly low-income and women of color, we are distressed by the severe and negative impact that this decision will have on all women, but in particular on women who are disenfranchised by racial, economic, and other injustices.

McCormack alumnus Vincent Loporchio and his wife Robin are again offering a generous scholarship to fully fund internships for two current graduate students at the John W. The John W. McCormack School of Policy and Global Studies partnered with the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) on May 11 to co-present an interdisciplinary panel discussion on the question “Does Democracy Protect Freedom?” McCormack Dean Rita Kiki Edozie and CLA Dean Tyson King-Meadows co-moderated the panel, where they were joined by two faculty members from each school.
