In Focus: Allium Ambassador

Bee-loved, deer-resistant Allium Ambassador is adored for its incredibly dense, floret-compacted, deep purple orbs that emerge to flower above lower-growing perennials: even mature Peony plantings! Its 7"-wide, balloon-like globes are comprised of hundreds of starry florets with paler lavender-purple centers and stamens. It is garden transformative.

Flowering after Globemaster, 4'-tall Ambassador is the latest big globe variety to bloom. A relatively new cultivar, it has incredibly strong stems: we had to cut it with our best kitchen shears. You won't believe how long the statuesque purple beauties stage their show: a good five weeks! Once the showy globe flowers pale and fade, dried seed pod orbs remain in the garden for continued vertical interest and textural drama. And as if this weren't enough, it's also a stunning cut flower. Allium Ambassador has been honored with the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.

Easy Fall Planting

Hardy for horticultural zones 5 through 7, Allium Ambassador bulbs should be planted in the fall when the soil has cooled down to about 55ºF. These plump, 20 cm bulbs should be planted 6" to 8" deep and 8" to 10" apart with the pointed sprouting tip up, and the basal plate down (the bottom of the bulb where the roots grow).

Allium Ambassador needs a minimum of six hours of daily sunlight and well-draining, neutral pH soil. Over time, it benefits from an organic, granular 4-10-6 or 5-10-5 fertilizer top dressing three times a year: in the fall, the early spring and as the flower starts to die back. Never put fertilizer within the planting hole because it could cause root burn.

If the winter threatens temperature spiking and/or inconsistent snow cover, Allium Ambassador would benefit from a 2" layer of mulch applied after the surface of the ground freezes. Prior to planting, the bulbs should be stored in a cool, dry place with low humidity between 50ºF and 70ºF.
