Girls Inc. National Scholar Announced

The Girls Inc. National Scholars Program offers scholarships to support Girls Inc. participants' college plans. Only 20 youth from all of the Girls Inc. affiliates were chosen and we are proud to announce that Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara's Lupita was selected!

Lupita is the epitome of a Girls inc girl! She is academically driven and is a leader in her community. She has been attending Girls Inc. since she was in first grade and is currently enrolled in our Goleta Valley Junior High Program. Lupita loves spending time with her nieces and nephews and listening to Spanish music.

"Looking back on all the years I have always been treated with such kindness. I feel very blessed to be able to have the Girls Inc experience and I am looking forward to seeing how much I grow in the program in the upcoming years."

CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH

This month we are honoring those who came before us and the sacrifices and accomplishments they have made. We must do our part to continue the positive impact and to encourage a new generation of leaders to stand up to inequality and use their voices for change!

The girls spent some time in our library reading many books about Black History. Make sure you follow our social media to see more activities throughout the month of February.

GYMNASTICS UPDATE

Our compulsory gymnasts had an amazing season, competing in four competitions as well as States in San Diego and bringing home both medals and memories. Our optional gymnasts are halfway through their competitive season and we look forward to many new accomplishments, skills, and friendships as we welcome new team members.

We are still enrolling for our recreational gymnastics season at both our Santa Barbara location, as well as our recently redecorated Goleta location.

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

Teen dating violence is widespread, and its effects are far-reaching.

Each year in the U.S., nearly 1.5 million high school students fall victim to abuse from a partner. Young women between the ages of 16 and 24 experience abuse at a rate almost 3x the national average and almost half of dating college women experience abusive behavior.1

At Girls Inc., our Healthy Sexuality curriculum contains modules that teach girls and teens about forming healthy and respectful relationships. OneLove also offers a series of free online videos complete with short discussion guides as well as activity suggestions to help youth identify signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships.

Did you know...

  • 80% of teenagers think verbal abuse is a serious issue for people their age. 2
  • Only 33% of teens who were in an abusive relationship ever told anyone about the abuse.
  • Half of teens who experience dating violence or rape attempt suicide.1
  • More than 1 in 4 teenage girls in a relationship are repeatedly verbally abused.2
