Women's History Month: The Next 50 Years

In honor of Women’s History Month, community leader and Girls Inc. Board Member Luz Reyes-Martín talks with Girls Inc. CEO Jen Faust about the future for gender equity. An abbreviated version of their conversation was published in the March 4, 2022 issue of Voice Magazine.

"Women’s history is a story of a multitude of strong women in coalition to improve community. This approach has been effective in bringing about societal transformations and I take that lesson to heart." - CEO Jen Faust

TK - 6TH

Facilitated by Autumn, our 4th-6th graders learned about how activism can be represented through art. They were shown different examples and then they were able to create their own artwork. Each youth chose a topic that they are passionate about and created canvas collages to practice activism through art. They used magazines, paint, markers, and 3-D materials to create their artwork.

Our teen programs at Goleta Valley Junior High and Santa Barbara Junior High have been partnering with A-Z cooking once a week, with each site having their own chef. The teens have learned how to use a food processor, hold knives, cutting techniques, how to handle vegetables and so much more. Additionally, this class brings our teens together in community. Before they eat, they thank one another and begin to pass around their dish to be served. During their mealtime, the teens socialize, share their opinions, and have an endless amount of laughter.

The Girls Inc. Gymnastics traveled to Camarillo for competition and put on a strong performance. Many of the girls obtained personal bests and this was a great opportunity to prepare themselves for the upcoming State Championships in San Diego later this month.

Level 5 Team brought home a 2nd Place finish!

Congratulations to all gymnasts on a great competition!

Save the Date!

On Saturday, May 7, 2022, Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara will host a community celebration to say a fond farewell to our Ortega Center. After 58 years at the site, we want to properly commemorate our past and celebrate our ongoing commitment to the community in new ways. At this center, Girls Inc. provided almost six decades worth of empowering programming to multiple generations. Through this event, we hope to reflect and honor the legacy of the investment Girls Inc. has made in the community.

Join us for a day of strong, smart, and bold activities, Mother's Day bouquet making, and food. Our library will also be open with all the books available to take home.
