Today we remember and honor the history, legacy and impact of
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader who transcended his era through teachings and civil discourse that resonate to this day. While much of his vision has been accomplished over these past years, there is still much that remains unfinished.
When racism, bigotry and the miscarriage of justice continue. We need to make a brighter future for all by closing the many gaps that exist throughout our society and across this country. We must create more equity in educational opportunities for all; foster a criminal justice system that is truly indiscriminate; and fight for equal access to services like healthcare, quality housing and employment opportunities.
We must talk about the challenges we face: a society deeply seated with a troubled past, of racism, sexism and discrimination across various divisions, that has left the landscape of America today, riddled with inequalities. Acknowledging these truths and discussing ways to overcome them - how to use government as a force for good - so that every individual, regardless of zip code, has the full ability to excel. We must come together on this National Day of Service to make our city more tolerant, more resilient and get to know our neighbors. The NYC Department of Parks and Recreation has provided a list of Day of Service
activities to celebrate the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is hosting their
33rd Annual Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr.
I hope that you will be an active participant to better our community. I hope that you will work side by side with everyone eager to see positive change in our city, state and nation, and build a brighter future for all.
