On this sad occasion, the Pastor, Board of Trustees, and all the auxiliary bodies of St. Sarkis Church, extend their heartfelt sympathy to Dorothy's family members.
Dorothy Avakian, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt, was born the 15th of August 1924 in old Delray in Detroit to her parents Manuel and Seranoush Hapetian.
Dorothy had a happy early childhood before emigrating to Marseille, France. Dorothy not only had to survive a depression but had to endure the Nazi occupation of France.
At the end of the war, she returned back to the United States to New York city, but had to leave her parents Seranoush and Manuel behind because they were not US citizens. In the ensuing six months in New York, Dorothy had to re-learn the English language.
After living in New York for six months, Dorothy moved to Providence Rhode Island, where she enjoyed traveling and fulfilling her passion for ballroom dancing, which consequently got her to meet and later marry Kevork Avakian.
During the following ten years, Dorothy’s mother Seranoush immigrated back to the United States where Dorothy gave birth to four children. Victor(Patty) Avakian, Harriet Freeman, Manuel Avakian and Mike Avakian.
A dutiful and very caring mother, she gave her all to her children. She worked for the Salvation Army beginning in 1964 until her retirement in December 31 2009. In that time, she rose from cashier to store manager and finally culminating in her being in charge of the monetary records of 32 stores.
In retirement, she loved cooking, especially her Armenian delicacies. She was an avid reader and her passion was loving and doting on her grandchildren: Brian (Alicia) Freeman, Stephanie Avakian, Jennifer (Dylan) Eberitzsch, and Eric Avakian, two great-grandchildren: Sophia Freeman and Madison Eberitzsch, like she always had with her own children.
Dorothy was a very kind-hearted woman who always tried to help others, without hesitation to the enth degree. Dorothy was loved very deeply and she will be sorely missed.
