On this sad occasion, the Pastor, Board of Trustees, and all the auxiliary bodies of St. Sarkis Church, extend their heartfelt sympathy to Dorothy's family members.
Born in Highland Park, MI, Dorothy was the daughter of Armenian immigrants, Nazenig (nee Maghakian) and Misak Avedisian. She attended school there, while growing up with her younger sisters, Hasmig and Jeanette. After graduation, Dorothy married Antranig Churukian, and had their three daughters, Adrina, Arlene and Alice.
Dorothy worked for many years as an executive secretary for Chrysler Corporation, and later at the Country Day High School, helping put her husband through dental school. After Adrina married, came two grandchildren, Aram and Stefanie, whom they both adored. Sadly, Andy passed away at age 53, before their third grandchild, Lorig, was born. Andy’s death prompted Dorothy to return to work. With her great secretarial skills, she secured a position at University of Detroit College.
Dorothy met Frank, her longtime companion, with whom she spent many years continuing to enjoy life to the fullest. As her grandchildren married, great-grandchildren came along, Jack, Peter, David, Lucie, Mary, Ani and Michael. She felt each day was precious and would often reply, “I’m the luckiest woman in the world, God Bless those grandchildren”.
Beloved sister of the late Hasmig Elledge and Jeanette Stepanian. Loving mother of Adrina (Dave) Sherman, Arlene, (Gary) Aidem and Alice (the late Bob) Knighton. Cherished grandmother and great-grandmother of Aram & Amanda Sherman, (and their sons, Jack and Peter), Stefanie & Mark Coburn (their 3 children, David, Lucie and Mary), Lorig & Bill Bishop (and their children, Ani and Michael Coe). Her upbeat personality and smile will be missed by numerous nieces, nephews, their families, and a long list of lifetime friends.
A private funeral service was held this week. May her soul rest in peace.
Dorothy's family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her memory be made to St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church (to make memorial donation online Click Here) or to Hospice of Michigan.
