On August 6, 2022, Jan White passed away in the comfort of her home in Washington, with her sister by her side. Jan had been fighting a multi-year battle with breast cancer. Jan attended San Diego State College from 1963-1968, studying Business Education. Jan then Attended Western Legal Arts from 1967 through 1969 and became a licensed Certified Shorthand Reporter on 8/1/1969.
Jan’s commitment to her profession as a deposition reporter is reflected in the success of her San Diego deposition firm. Jan spent countless years servicing her clients with the latest court-reporter technology, while at the same time teaching, training, and mentoring young professional deposition reporters. Jan also was volunteering endless hours to her local court reporter association, the General Reporters of San Diego Association, as well as to the California Court Reporters Association and NCRA/NCSA, the National Committee of State Associations.
Jan was elected by her peers as CCRA President and served her one-year term in that capacity in 2002-2003. Prior to her service as President of CCRA, in the late 1980s Jan spent many years working on various CCRA committees, the Legislative Council, and as a Director on the Board. There were many days and evenings spent at meetings and dinners, lunches, exchanging ideas she thought would improve the reporting profession, both deposition/freelance and official reporters. It made no difference to Jan, freelancer or official, court reporters are a group of professionals working together to address the issues facing the profession – “We are all in this together.” Jan worked just as hard for CCRA and the reporting profession as she did in her business, always there to lend a hand and take a leadership role, if warranted.
It is agreed, by all who served under her leadership, that Jan had an innate ability to recognize each board members’ talents, encouraging each board member to live up to their potential and to strive to contribute to the success of CCRA. It was a pleasure to serve under Jan’s leadership.
Jan lived life to the fullest. She always was an optimist, always had a big, genuine smile on her face. She would light up the room with her smile and her stories about court reporting. It can be said that every minute spent in Jan’s company became a new memorable moment.
It is with a heavy heart that we say good-bye to Jan. She made a difference in many people’s lives and will always be remembered as a person and court reporter with great character.
