IN MEMORIAM

It is with profound sadness that we announce that Sousa Mendes Foundation Board member Dan Subotnik has died. The son of Sousa Mendes visa recipients Lejzer and Emma Subotnik, he was a Professor at Touro Law Center on Long Island. A wise and kind man with a quick wit, who spoke four languages fluently, he was a friend and mentor to many. The Foundation Board of Directors sends deep condolences to the Subotnik family.

Every week of 2024 we feature a hero from our Rescuer Playing Cards. This week we honor Recha Freier.

She rescued Jewish teenagers from Nazi-occupied Europe through the Youth Aliyah movement. “I was fated to live and to work on the other side, in darkness, affliction, and suffering. The youth that came to Palestine stepped into the front ranks of the nation which came to life on its own soil. This light was visible to all.”

Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel fled Nazi Germany and became an authoritative voice not only in the Jewish community but also in the religious life of America. His book, The Prophets, inspired Martin Luther King, Jr. to invite him to take a leadership role in the Civil Rights Movement. Heschel was an outspoken critic of the Vietnam War, an advocate for Soviet Jewry and a pioneer of interfaith dialogue.
