During his 34 years as a research chemist at ExxonMobil, Jack collaborated with other brilliant scientists to solve problems in the field of energy: lithium batteries, carbon capture & storage, liquid to gas conversion. When Jack started his career at Exxon in 1977, it was believed that the oil & gas reserves on this planet would be depleted by 2015. By 2011 when Jack retired, scientists have discovered that, if we burn all the fossil fuels, the environment of our planet will be ruined for all creatures that breathe the air.
Jack helped build the kind of community which children and old people thrive in. As he raised his sons Luke, Erik & Mark, he coached baseball & soccer in the Clinton area and held leadership roles at Clinton Presbyterian Church (CPC). From 2009 to 2020, Jack taught freshman chemistry at The College of New Jersey as an adjunct professor.
Jack’s musical talents always added to the community. He faithfully attended weekly choral rehearsals at CPC and the Hunterdon Choral Union. His bass voice was superb, whether in a chorus or as a soloist. He played guitar and flute in the community & at home, inspiring his sons to be musicians and good fathers, as well as good scientists and mathematicians.
Jack was a seeker of truth in his personal life, his scientific career, his community & in Bible study. Whatever your religious beliefs, Jack wants you to know that nothing can separate you from the love of God. Jack & Carol appreciate all the love & prayers, especially from their current churches: Grace United Church of Christ (Grace UCC) in Flemington NJ 08822 www.graceuccnj.org and Church of the Holy Spirit (Episcopal) in Lebanon NJ 088 .
Carol’s address is 5111 Fellowship Road in Basking Ridge NJ 07920. Luke, Kelly, Kai & Freya live in Colorado. Erik, Lily, Rhys & Tesla live in North Carolina. Mark, Carisia, Soleil & Tristan live in California. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held later this year.
All is well. Nothing can separate you from God’s love.
