Reverend Robert (Bob) Ray Braun was born on September 15, 1936, in Taylor, Texas, to Gustav Benjamin Braun and Hedwig Streit Braun and is the oldest of 4 children. Bob was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Taylor, Tx. He graduated from Taylor High School in 1955 and Texas Lutheran College in 1959.
On August 31, 1958, Bob married the love of his life, Beverly Wickson of Kerrville, Tx. They moved to Leander, Tx, where he taught and coached for 3 years prior to serving in the U.S. Army Security Agency, 1962-1965, in Asmara, Ethiopia. They stayed in Ethiopia as Lay Missionaries with the American Lutheran Church.
Bob returned to the United States in 1966 and attended seminary, and adopted two children: Vicki and Mark. He graduated from Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, and was ordained in 1971 with a call to service with the American Lutheran Church in Ethiopia. He served as minister, coordinator of famine and electrical services 1971-1976.
Upon return to the United States, Reverend Braun served the following congregations:
- Bethany Lutheran, Fredericksburg, Tx, (Reorientation), 1976-1977
- St. John’s Lutheran, Deanville, Tx/St. John’s Lutheran, Dime Box, Tx, 1977-1981
- Grace Lutheran, Slaton, Tx, 1981-1986
- St. Paul, Shelby, Tx/St. Paul, Fayetteville, Tx, 1986-1993
Reverend Braun then participated in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Program at St. Luke’s Hospital, San Antonio, 1993-1994. He then served in the following Specialized Ministries:
- Nursing Homes Chaplain, Hospice Chaplain
- Interim Pastor at Mathis & Taft, 1998-1999
- Interim Pastor at Grace, San Antonio, 1999-2000
- Visitation Pastor at St. John’s, San Antonio, 2000-2007
- Interim Pastor at St. Mark’s, Atkins, Tx, 2008-2016
In his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, woodworking, and woodworking in his woodshop as well as being an active member of Triumphant Lutheran Church, Garden Ridge, Tx.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Gustav Benjamin Braun and Hedwig Streit Braun and his son-in-law, Troy Rudloff of Round Top,Tx, and brother-in-law Phillip Twilley of Houston.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Beverly Braun of Schertz, Tx; His daughter Vicki Rudloff of Round Top,Tx; Granddaughters Mandi Hedgpeth of Round Top, her husband Drew Hedgpeth, and their children Raiden, Adeline, and Ainslee; and Allysa Rudloff of Round Top, her partner Andrew Wagner, and their children Hunter and Wyatt; his son Mark Braun of San Diego, Ca, his husband Daniel Benjamin and their son, Greffen. He is also survived by his siblings, Leroy Braun, Doris Englehardt, and Kathy Twilley, their spouses, children, and grandchildren.
Celebration of Life for Reverend Braun will be held on July 8, 2023, 2:00pm, at Triumphant Lutheran Church, 21315 Bat Cave Rd, Garden Ridge, TX, 78266.
