In Memory of Helen Probst

November 12, 1930 - July 6, 2025

Helen Vernell Steinbring Probst, 94, of New Braunfels, wife of late pastor Charles Probst who served as a rostered leader in the Southwestern Texas Synod, finished her journey on Earth on Sunday, July 6, 2025, at Eden Hill Communities. She was born November 12, 1930, in New Braunfels, Texas to Edmund and Melanie Steinbring.

She graduated from Austin High School (Austin), attended Texas Lutheran College (Seguin), and graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Nursing (Galveston) in 1953 with a degree in Nursing.

Helen married Charles Dudley Probst on Tuesday, June 16, 1953, at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Austin. They were married for 69 years and dated each other for 4 years before that. A lifetime of service followed, influencing the lives of many through her ministry and the way she lived. She served as a registered nurse in Dubuque, Iowa; Sherman, TX; New Orleans, LA, El Paso, TX, and Baytown, TX. She also taught at the Lee College School of Nursing (Baytown).

She served by Charles’ side in ministry at three mission congregations – Trinity Lutheran (Sherman, TX), Christ the King Lutheran (Kenner, LA) and Mt. Hope Lutheran (El Paso, TX). Their final and longest tenure was at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Baytown, TX (1970 – 1989) including a preaching point at Trinity Lutheran (Liberty, TX). She and Charles retired from parish ministry in 1989 to New Braunfels, TX where she served as Director of Nursing at Eden Home (now Eden Hill Communities) and worked on remodeling her family (late 1800s) homestead.

Helen was a friend to many, always ready with an infectious smile, a word of encouragement, and the time to listen and pray. She will truly be missed by many and remembered by all.

“Rise and Shine! This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it”  was the way she woke her children every morning and this is the way she led her life, one of joy and service to our Lord and Saviour.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband Charles, her parents, sister-in-law Joyce Friedrich, and sister-in-law Sue Steinbring.

Survivors include her four children: Mark Probst (Marcy), M’Liss Brockman (Rusty), Mike Probst (Diane), and M’Rique Probst; brother Rev. Edmund Steinbring, Jr., brothers-in-law Rev. Walter Probst, Jr (Marilyn) and Dr. Major Friedrich, 5 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren (with another on the way), and a large extended family.

Visitation with the family will be Friday, July 11, at Peace Lutheran Church in New Braunfels, TX from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m.

Her Celebration of Life Service will immediately follow at 10:00 a.m.

Following the Celebration, a time of fellowship will be held at the church for approximately one hour followed by a Graveside Service at Comal Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given to Texas Lutheran University Charles D. and Helen V. Probst Scholarship Fund, Peace Lutheran Church, or Hope Hospice (New Braunfels).

We remember Helen's family and friends in our prayers and trust that the promise of the Resurrection is true and sure.

In Christ,

Bishop Sue Briner
