It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our friend Kimberly Nimmer, who passed away suddenly on January 16. A Team Leader, educator, and mentor to many, Kim brought passion, expertise, and fun to the many ITRC teams and training groups she volunteered to serve with.
Kim’s career was dedicated to public service. She enjoyed a 20-year career with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, managing several programs and sections. In recent years, Kim spent time with the City of Raleigh, NC, Municipal, and in 2024 she joined the Orange Water and Sewer Authority (OWASA) as its Planning and Development Manager.
Kim’s contributions to ITRC, our membership and our customers are immeasurable. She joined us in 2021 and served as the Co-Lead for her first team, Microplastics. In her short time with us, Kim led multiple Subgroups and Training teams including the CEC and BioCEC Teams, Microplastics Outreach Team, and was currently serving as a Subgroup Leader on our Sustainable Waste Team and active trainer for multiple courses. In 2023, Kim was also nominated by her peers and honored with the CEC Team Member of the Year award in 2023. During that same year, she represented ITRC at the 2023 ecoforum hosted by the Australasian Land & Groundwater Association (ALGA) to discuss microplastics - a trip that she treasured as an amazing experience and talked about often, and one that was key in helping ITRC grow our relationships internationally.
Read more about Kim’s impact and contributions in a recent Member Spotlight we produced with her last year: Kim's Member Spotlight.
Please keep Kim’s family, her husband Terry and two daughters Sienna and Mira, in your thoughts as they try to navigate this difficult time. We also send our deepest condolences to the many friends, colleagues, and members who are grieving this tremendous loss.
