In Memory of Rev. Marlo Petersen

December 4, 1930 - April 17, 2025

Rev. Marlo D. Petersen, born December 4, 1930, in Minot North Dakota to Chramer & Marie Petersen (Anderson), peacefully entered eternal rest on April 17, 2025, at the age of 94. A beloved Lutheran minister in the E.L.C.A., devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Marlo spent his life in faithful service to God, his family, and his community.

Marlo was a man of deep faith and quiet strength, dedicating his life to ministry and sharing the Word of God with all those he encountered. He was a loving and faithful husband to his late wife Dorothy, and together they built a home filled with love, laughter, and purpose.

He found great joy in life’s simple pleasures—camping, fishing, singing with the church choir, and playing music in a brass ensemble. His warm spirit and joyful heart touched countless lives both in and out of the pulpit. Having made his way from North Dakota to Texas in the 1960’s he began serving as a Hospital Chaplain and later a Chaplain Supervisor, teacher and mentor to many at The Methodist Hospital in Houston.

Marlo is survived by his children Bruce Petersen (Kris), Robin Kohler (Kirk), and Michael Petersen (Dana), Daughter In-Law Teresa Petersen (Parman); grandchildren Dane Petersen, Bryce Petersen, Keri Emerson, Paige Petersen, Heidi Petersen, Dr. Kelsey Johnson, Kristen Kohler, and Soren Petersen; and great-grandchildren James Petersen, Hallie Petersen, Bridget Petersen, George Petersen, Cade Petersen, Evelyn Emerson, and Marlo Rhett Emerson, who proudly carries his name.

Preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy S. Petersen, and eldest son Mark David Petersen.

Marlo’s legacy of faith, family, and love will live on through the lives of all who knew him. His unwavering devotion, generous spirit, and deep kindness will be missed but never forgotten.

A celebration of life service was held at Christ Lutheran Church in Alamo Heights, TX on May 31, 2025. Donations may be made to Christ Lutheran Church - Alamo Heights, TX in Marlo’s honor.

We remember Marlo's family and friends in our prayers and trust that the promise of the Resurrection is true and sure.

In Christ,

Bishop Sue Briner
