In Memory of The Rev. Dr. E. David Henry

November 28, 1946 – January 4, 2026

E. David Henry was born on November 28, 1946, in Temple, Texas, to E.E. “Buck,” and Lillie Henry. He was baptized and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Rockdale, Texas. David grew up in the small town of Rockdale, the proud son of the owner of Henry Garage—a family business that continued for nearly 70 years.

David is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Bobby Jo “BJ” Henry; two sons, Paul David Henry and wife April of Spicewood, Texas, and Joel Robert Henry and wife Melissa of Manvel, Texas; and six beloved grandchildren: Jackson David, Luke Nathaniel, Blake Robert, Cameron Joel, Caroline Ann, and Charlie David; his sister, Ann Henry of Austin; BJ’s brothers, Bill Jones and wife Terry, and John Jones and wife Becky; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pastor Henry graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a B.S. in Pharmacy in 1969 and an M.S. in 1971. During his time at UT, he was recognized as an Outstanding Student (Spring 1969), inducted into the Friar Society and the Rho Chi Honorary Society, and served as president of the Longhorn Pharmaceutical Association.

After marrying BJ in 1970—to the surprise of his family—and especially his wife—David followed his true calling and entered Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1972. He graduated in 1976 and was ordained on February 8 of that year. He later earned his Doctor of Ministry from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1984.

Pastor Henry served three congregations: Grace Lutheran Church in Bandera, Texas; Risen Lord Lutheran Church in Odessa, Texas; and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Marble Falls, Texas from 1980 to 2010.

Following his retirement from active ministry, he returned to his first profession as a pharmacist, working at Cattle’s Pharmacy in Lampasas and at H-E-B Pharmacies in Marble Falls and Burnet, retiring officially in 2014, alongside his pharmacist wife, BJ.

David was blessed with a loving family who surrounded him with care throughout his illness. His deep love for BJ; his sons, Paul and Joel; his two daughters-in-law, April and Melissa; his six grandchildren; his caregiver grandson, Luke; and his cherished sister, Ann, sustained him always. Special appreciation is extended to his many friends who reached out personally during his illness.

David believed that everyone should be passionate about something. His passions included pipe organs and pipes, music from Bach to jazz, his 1929 Model A Roadster, trains of all kinds—including his model trains—and, most of all, his church. He believed that, in turbulent times, the church must be a witness to the grace of God. God’s unlimited grace—and our response to it—was always at the heart of his sermons: to love others and to experience God’s love in his creation.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Pastor Henry at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 1803 Hwy 1431, Marble Falls, TX, on Saturday, January 24th, 2026 at 1:00pm. A reception in the Fellowship Hall will immediately follow. The service will also be livestreamed. Clergy in attendance are invited to vest and process. The color of the day is green.

Memorial gifts may be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, mailed to 1803 Hwy 1431, Marble Falls, TX 78654 or by giving online through their website. Memorial gifts may also be made to Lutheran World Relief at lwr.org.

We remember David's family and friends in our prayers and trust that the promise of the Resurrection is true and sure.

In Christ,

Bishop Sue Briner
