Providing Equitable Access to 21st Century Literacy Skills for 1st Generation Students

Greetings!

We hope this finds you well and enjoying the comforts of fall. It's been a busy year for ForWords, and we're so grateful for your ongoing support.

As we head into the final few months of 2021, we wanted to share a few quick program updates and this joyful image of current ForWords students Adriana, Roselyn and Aileen—and Alex the cat (photography credit: William Winston).

In-Person Learning Returns

ForWords students and programs have finally returned from online learning to in-person classrooms at San Rafael and Terra Linda High Schools, Davidson Middle School and on Saturdays at our Montecito Literacy Lab.

We're in full swing providing academic support at all three schools, and students are reading, writing, performing and exploring the arts.

Our after school and Saturday programs have students engaged in reading three separate novels and are starting to create visual art projects and writing related to the books' themes. Everyone is excited about upcoming college visits and cultural explorations in our vibrant community!

Creating a Community of Learners & Leaders

Summer Bridge to High School

100% of ForWords Summer Bridge students successfully completed the program. The cohort included academic essay writing, poetry and performance. To celebrate the completion of the program, students and their families and friends gathered for our traditional Poetry & Pizza evening, where students shared their poems and were awarded their first 5 units of high school credit.

Newcomer Summer

In this important program, youth educators worked with newcomer students during the afternoons all summer long. Ranging from grade 6 through 9, these English language learners practiced their oral and written English skills and created beautiful masks showcasing aspects of their home country.
