From the desk of Father Al

Dear friends in the Risen Lord,

I was asked by one of last week’s first communicants—a 2nd grader!—if I posted on Facebook! I had to explain that I’m a dinosaur, and grew up in a world without smart phones and social media. He could hardly believe that. The truth is that I did, once, have a Facebook account, but I cancelled it back in 2016. I was heartbroken, during that election season, to read so many posts—from people I otherwise loved and respected—that were nothing short of calumny and detraction.

Those are sins we don’t talk about very often these days. To tell an untruth about another person is calumny. To reveal the hidden fault or sin of another without sufficient cause, so that the person's reputation or good name is seriously damaged, is the sin of detraction.

As you remember from your catechism, sins against justice require restitution. A person who has lied about another can sometimes right the wrong by retracting the lie and stating the truth. With detraction the situation is more difficult, since it is not a matter of lying but of revealing the hidden sins or faults of another that should not be revealed in these circumstances.

There is the famous story of a priest (often said to be St. Philip Neri) who, for a penance, told the town gossip to go to the bell tower and scatter to the wind the feathers from a pillow. When she returned he told her to then gather up all the feathers and put them back into the pillow. That object lesson about the impossibility of complete restitution in the case of calumny and detraction seems downright quaint in this age of digital media. A calumnious or detracting tweet or post can be viewed by thousands or even millions of followers.

It goes without saying that awful examples of calumny and detraction are in the news every day. Let’s all rededicate ourselves to setting a better example—a Christ-like example—for one another in the Body of Christ—and especially for our young, who are learning from everything we say and do.

Your brother in Christ’s word and work,

Mother's Day Novena

It is our custom to celebrate a Novena (nine days) of Masses on behalf of our Mothers, Grandmothers, and those who have been a mother to us. It is proper to remember those who have died and to honor our mothers and grandmothers who are still living. The Novena will begin on Mother’s Day and continue through the week. Please visit our parish website through the link below to include names in the novena

A Blessing for Mothers

We bless you and we praise you,

God of our mothers!

You are the God of Eve, mother of all the living.

You are the God of Sarah,

who laughed at childbearing in old age.

You are the God of Rebekah,

who favored her second-born, Jacob.

You are the God of Leah, mother of tribes,

and of Rachel, who mourned and

wrestled and won.

You are the God of Hannah,

who strongly sang your praise for Samuel,

and of Naomi, who faithfully walked with Ruth.

You are the God of Elizabeth, who bore the Baptist,

and of Ann, the grandmother of Jesus.

You are the God of Mary,

Spirit’s spouse and mother of our Savior,

given by Christ on the cross to be

the mother of us all.

We thank you, God, for the gift of our mothers,

for grandmothers and godmothers

and mothers-in-law, too.

Send your Holy Spirit upon our mothers,

at whose breasts we were fed,

by whose hands we were cleaned and clothed,

and at times corrected.

in whose laps we learned to sing and speak

and play and pray,

at whose side we hear your word

and celebrate your mysteries.

Heal their pains and disappointments.

Forgive all that needs to be forgiven.

Give to them the good that they have given others.

Welcome to your bosom those who have died.

Fill this world, O God, with a mother’s love!

We ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ,

who gathers us together

as a hen gathers her brood under her wings,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

God forever and ever. Amen.
