16 EHS students named National Merit Semifinalists
The National Merit Scholarship Program has announced that 16 Edina High School (EHS) seniors have been named 2018 semifinalists. The EHS students are among 300 semifinalists from Minnesota and about 16,000 in the nation, which represents less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors. They will compete for scholarships worth more than $32 million. Read more
Five EHS seniors named National Hispanic Scholars
The College Board, which provides Advanced Placement curriculum and SAT college entrance exams, has named five Edina High School seniors National Hispanic Scholars. They are: Jonah Calvo, Antonio Flores, Ian Layton, Connor Silva, and Juan Uribe. Read more
Summer art projects win awards at State Fair
Summer fun became award winning art for some Edina students last month. Approximately 150 works of art created by 88 students, who were enrolled in summer youth camps and classes through Community Education Services, were on display in the Education Building at the Minnesota State Fair. About half of them received first, second, third or fourth place ribbons. Two photographs were even under consideration for a Grand Prize ribbon. Read more
Levy Referendum Community Conversations planned for October
Families, staff and community are invited to come together to learn more about district finances and have conversation about Edina Public Schools’ future at upcoming Operating Levy Community Conversations set for next month:

  • Thursday, Oct. 5, 9:30 a.m., Edina Senior Center
  • Thursday, Oct. 12, 9:30 a.m., Edina Senior Center, sponsored by the League of Women Voters-Edina
  • Thursday, Oct. 12, 7-8:30 p.m., Edina Community Center, Room 349, planning for live stream and interactivity through social media
  • Tuesday, Oct. 24, 7-8:30 p.m., Edina High School, Community Room

Construction Update
Security enhancements near completion at six district sites
Security enhancements are in final stages of implementation at district buildings where additions and renovations have been completed. Security enhancements were one of three primary areas for the Next Generation Facilities Plan funded by the 2015 bond referendum. The plan calls for renovations of main office areas at all sites in order to create controlled entrances and access to schools, as well as updates to security technologies.
District asbestos protocols posted online
The district follows long-standing and ongoing asbestos monitoring practices as required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA). Prior to any type of facilities improvement (such as HVAC, the addition of kindergarten spaces several years ago, and the building additions and renovations that have occurred over the past year) there is an asbestos abatement process that occurs. Federal and state requirements around the safe removal of asbestos-containing materials are very specific and the district employs experts to do this work. Read more

Former Cornelia parents find facility improvements ‘beautiful’
More than 30 years ago, the last of Don and Donna Montgomery’s eight children “graduated” from Cornelia Elementary School. But that didn’t stop them from joining the throng of families at the Aug. 31 Open House. “We watched the construction over there all summer,” Donna said. “It was so big – we wondered ‘what is going on in there?’” Don said they saw the sign out front and all the cars and they knew this was their chance. “We didn’t hesitate,” Donna said. State Educational Benefits can help pay for school meals
Families who qualify may received Educational Benefits that provide free and reduced-price school meals. An FAQ and application form is available here , on the Food and Nutrition Services section of the district website, and in the 2017 Family Handbook that was mailed to homes. Note that a new form must be completed each school year. And applications are accepted at any time during the year in the event of a change in income. If you have questions or need help completing the form, call Food and Nutrition Services at 952-848-3811.
Reading Corps literacy tutor positions available
There are open positions at Concord and Countryside elementary schools and the Early Learning Center for Literacy Tutors through the Reading Corps . Learn more about the positions here .

Sept. 25 Meeting Preview
The Board will meet for a Work Session at 5:30 p.m. to review the proposed scope of a Transportation Efficiency Study.

Agenda items for the regular Board meeting include reports and discussion about:
  • Nov. 7 Levy Referendum
  • Learners Edge (parent portal)
  • Course credit for learning policy
Approval of:
  • Tax levy 2017 payable 2018
  • Parameters for calendar planning for 2018-19 and 2019-20

The Sept. 25 regular School Board meeting is at 7 p.m. in the Edina Community Center, Room 349.
