Once a month, we like to feature a staff member here in In The Know. Since Nancy Olson has recently agreed to stay on as our Acting Director of Faith Formation for an additional year, (woot woot!) what better time to feature her than right now!
Nancy (she/her) has served UU congregations in Oregon and Indiana for almost 30 years. She came out of retirement to return to All Souls as Acting Director of Faith Formation as the congregation navigates a time of transition. Nancy loves collaborating with individuals and groups in creating spaces and programs where every person is welcomed and encouraged to become the best version of themselves; where ideas flow freely; and problems are solved in creative, communal ways.
Nancy is a graduate of Christian Theological seminary with a masters in Pastoral Care and Clinical Counseling and brings that experience to overall church work and particularly in facilitating groups and meeting people where they are in their lives.
When not at All Souls, Nancy lives in Franklin with her spouse, Ann, dog Bodhi and cat, Josie. She enjoys all things outdoors, cooking for others, building things and learning something new. She especially enjoys time with her grandchildren.

It's Guest at Your Table (GAYT) Time
The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee's (UUSC) annual intergenerational program to raise support for and awareness about key human rights issues. Since UUSC works in more than 20 countries, with over 50 grassroots partners, there are thousands of individuals involved in and who benefit from the work that UUSC members make possible. Vicki Broadie and Susan Vinicor will be available after the service to chat with you about UUSC and hand out GAYT boxes this Sunday. Here is a short video you can watch to learn more.

Banned Book Bulletin Board
It was fun to see how many banned books our congregation has read! Certainly many of us have read or taught the classics like Steinbeck, Vonnegut, Salinger, Fitzgerald, and Golding. And we have read or taught newer books like The Color Purple and the Kite Runner. As children we read EB White, CS Lewis, and Anne Frank.
There were several books on our Banned Book Bulletin Board that very few or no one read. We have listed them below. Perhaps this winter you may like to add one of these to your list or encourage a book group to read:
-
Flamer by Mark Curato
-
Milk and Honey by Rupu Kaur
-
Push by Sapphire
-
Looking for Alaska by Indiana author John Green
-
Wish You Were Here by Indiana author Barb Shoup
-
Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe
-
Sold by Patricia McCormick
Or you might just want to visit Loudmouth Books or the Indy Reads Bookstore in Indianapolis, or Curious Squirrel Bookshop in Zionsville, to see what other banned books you might want to read.

The Social Justice Team Wants to Know What you Think
In an effort to better target the concerns of All Souls congregants in our social justice work, we are looking forward to having conversations: one-to-one conversations, small-group conversations, short conversations – long conversations – all conversations!
As part of All Souls participation in Faith in Indiana’s mission of bringing Central Indiana churches together to combat injustice, we would like to add our voices, reflecting what particular issues concern us most at this time. Over the next few weeks, we will be inviting individuals – and, organizing group discussions that will allow us to speak to as many All Souls congregants as possible.
If you already know you would like to participate, feel free to reach out to any member of the SJT (listed below) at church, and we will set up a time when we can talk.
- Jackie Anderson
- Verlann Major
- Helen Dwyer
- Lynne Rohmerien Martin
- Kate Gill Kressley
- Zachary Schenetzke
You may also email Lynne at rohmerien@msn.com, and a member of the team will be in contact with you.

Recycling is CHANGING at All Souls
While at All Souls we are seeking to do the work of not only being a Green Sanctuary but also pushing the envelope to move toward Net Carbon Zero by 2040, we are also navigating other challenges. Did you know that most plastics can't be recycled? Did you know that much of what we get in our bins is too dirty to be recycled? And, our bins have been getting contaminated with larger trash and used furniture that not only costs All Souls extra to be removed, but also contaminates the entire bin. So, we are working on a new strategy.
In the next few weeks, our bins will be going away. We are going to move to cardboard recycling and will move that bin to near where the trash is now, the styrofoam recycling will also be relocated there. We hope this will increase the possibility that things will actually be able to be used by the recycling facility and we hope that it will also help us get our trash bills under control by eliminating the use of bins that people use for illegal dumping.
If you need a new place to recycle other items, check out this link: https://www.indy.gov/activity/find-a-recycling-drop-off-location

Sponsor a Beautiful View
All Souls would like to add flowers to our chancel on a weekly basis. Sign-up to sponsor a display for $85. Your sponsorship can be in honor of an event, as a memorial, or simply to add a beautiful focus during our worship time and will be noted in the Order of Service. Sign-up here https://bit.ly/408bqFG.
Since this will be done as a means to add beauty, honor loved ones or events and FUNDRAISE, we also need people to provide flowers. If you are interested in helping to create or supply flower displays, sign-up here https://bit.ly/408bqFG. If you have any questions, contact Virginia Snell at vsnell62@gmail.com. Joys & Sorrows - In Our Hearts, Thoughts, and Prayers | |
Elizabeth Valencia and Her Boys Zach and Laythe Are Directly Affected by the Killings in Gaza
They have more than 1000 members of their family who are Palestinians in Gaza. They need help and support as they navigate this time and their grief and worry. Cards with notes of support and gift cards to places like Grubhub or DoorDash are particularly helpful to them as meal creation can be challenging right now. Having gift cards gives them the flexibility to have nourishment and support local Muslim and Arab-owned businesses that also need support right now.
