GCISD students place in Mathematician competition
Two GCISD students, Eric Tong and Garrett Wezniak, participated in the  Who Wants to Be a Mathematician  competition at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. Tong, a 5th grader from Glenhope Elementary, finished in third place in his round and won a Calculus textbook. Wezniak, a senior from Colleyville Heritage High School, tied for second place in his round, winning Maple 2016 (math software).

"Our GCISD students performed well alongside students from other districts and schools in the Metroplex," said Jennifer Hylemon, GCISD director of math. "Garrett answered more questions correctly than most other students in the competition. Eric explained his reasoning using mathematically precise language when called upon by the moderator in front of a crowd of students and adults. I am so proud of the efforts of these students!"

Questions for the contest were selected from areas of pre-calculus including algebra, trigonometry, geometry, history of mathematics, combinatorics, and probability.  Tong and Wezniak were two of eight students selected for the competition based on their high scores on a qualifying test provided by the American Mathematical Society.
Environmentalist visits Glenhope Elementary
S tudents at Glenhope Elementary School welcomed local Soil Environmentalist Al Voelkle who led interactive lessons about the soil and our environment during the students' science classes. Students divided into small groups and explored four different stations on soil inquiry, complete with two hands-on soil stations. They also got an up-close look at a soil drilling machine, brought by Voelkle.

"I feel that having parents involved and sharing about their careers builds communication and community with our school families," said Bryan Hendrickson, fourth grade teacher at Glenhope ES. "It shows the students that what we are learning about in the classroom is important for their future and may spur career ideas for students to pursue."
GCISD celebrates Red Ribbon Week
Schools across GCISD celebrated Red Ribbon Week from October 24-28. During this week, students pledge to make healthy choices and live drug-free. Students and staff are showing their support through dress-up days (such as "Put a Cap on Drugs" and "Texans Give Drugs the Boot"), indoor and outdoor decorating contests, kick-off pep rallies, and many more district-wide events.

On Monday, October 24, the GCISD Board of Trustees signed a proclamation declaring this week as Red Ribbon Week for the entire district. ( Download the proclamation.)

For pictures of events from throughout the week, check out our district Facebook page. Be sure to also visit campus pages to see how each campus is celebrated Red Ribbon Week.
GCISD students lead presentations at Region 11 STEAM Carnival
This year, the Region 11 Education Service Center hosted its annual Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (or "STEAM") Carnival on Tuesday, October 18. Students from Grapevine Middle School and Glenhope Elementary School served as presenters for the showcase portion of the event, to demonstrate how to use devices and enhance STEAM learning and problem solving. Some of the activities featured included circuitry, sphero robotics, and more.

"Attending this event allowed our students the opportunity to hone their communication and problem solving skills as they share their learning with peers," said Tony Zahn, director of science and instructional technology. "It also allows the district to highlight an example of how we continue to be the best."
