In The Loop-Monthly Musings from Henrys Lake Foundation

Henrys Lake-The Season is On

And here we go again. As we enter the open water season, angler reports are beginning to emerge, and dedicated enthusiasts are making their evaluations. Concurrently, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) has concluded its annual gillnetting effort, and the abundance trend data is currently being analyzed. We anticipate that Nathan will present the findings at our annual gathering.

The preliminary data suggests that the survival rate of last year’s stocked fish appears to be promising. As mentioned in the previous month, this year class of fish typically is under represented, which suggests potential progress in fish survival rates. The transition back to fall stocking of hybrids this year is expected to further enhance survival rates.

On another positive note, the assessment indicates impressive numbers of large fish. Angler efforts seem to corroborate these findings, with reports of large fish already noted. Historical patterns on Henrys Lake suggest that low fish numbers often correlate with the presence of larger fish. This year may present an excellent opportunity for anglers to catch a 10-pound hybrid.

However, concerns remain. The average number of trout per gillnet is comparable to last year's figures. While fluctuations are typical for Henrys Lake, the current downward trend appears prolonged. This situation is likely more challenging for those managing the fishery than for the anglers. As previously noted, when trout per net averages remain low, catch rates are unlikely to meet management goals. The recent years' data underscores the concern.

And hence that’s why we’ve collaborated with the IDFG to address low recruitment. The partnership combines the expertise of IDFG with the financial support of the Henrys Lake Foundation (HLF). In addition, they’ve taken our suggestions and input to develop a project that may in fact change the stocking efforts unlike anything we’ve seen in decades. Although many of you are familiar with the scope of this project, we are excited to share more details at our annual event. We’re taking the opportunity the IDFG has provided to be part of the solution.

You too can be part of the solution. Join us on June 27, 2025, at Meadow Vue Ranch. Hear the proposals and be present to ask questions. You can only be informed and you can be part of the solution process.
