Our Beautiful Fish
Looking back on the 2023 fishing season there have been many ups and downs. Some anglers complain about the lack of fish, others have had some great days. The ebb and flow of catch rates and fish size is all part of the Henrys Lake puzzle and don’t forget that luck has a lot to do with it.
I have fished in the lake consistently since the 1980’s and consider myself a good angler. It can be frustrating not catching fish as often as you want. Sometimes you really have to work for it. An angler next to you is catching fish and you are not. But, as many anglers will attest, it is easy to ask the other angler what is working. Invariably, fishermen are more than willing to give advice and share some of their secrets, but not all. This tribal knowledge has served me well over the years.
Everyone seems to have their favorite fly patterns at Henrys. Some patterns are even passed down through generations. Many fly anglers take pride in tying their own flies and then sharing them with others to see if they have the same luck. Many times, they do. I am one of those who like to tie and share patterns. I had the benefit of learning from some of the best and feel somewhat obliged to carry on the tradition. It is this rapport that makes fishing Henrys even more fun. The downside is that you can end up with a lot of flies in your fly box!
As we all enjoy the off-season, I want to wish you well and leave you with a couple of pictures of nice fish that I caught last year. I eagerly await a good water year with good angling.
Tight lines,
Phil Barker
