Scientific Research Study by SBS and New Bolton Center

Recently, Paul Loomis and Kristin Klohanatz of SBS collaborated with Drs. Leo Brito and Gary Althouse from New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania on a new research study. This study was initiated due to changes made for the import requirements of equine frozen semen into the European Union (EU). The EU is recommending a combination of gentamicin, tylosin, lincomycin and spectinomycin (GTLS) be added to equine freezing extender to control bacterial growth. However, this combination had not been tested in equine semen. In our laboratories, we typically use a combination of Penicillin and amikacin in our freezing extenders. Would this combination of antibiotics prove to be equally as effective as GTLS? Click on the link below to read the published research article.

Parturition in the Mare

Whether these events are noticeable or not, they are a necessity for the proper progression of labor and delivery. In this article, Dr. Scofield, of SBS Veterinary Services, reviews the stages of parturition and summarizes the hormonal events that are occurring with your mare during this incredible physiological process.
