Transfer
Life Pro Tips: Lance
(Major: Public Health)
I’m a lifelong San Diego native from Chula Vista, California. I transferred from Southwestern Community College and transferred to San Diego State University in the fall of 2023. I’m currently involved in our newly formed SDSU Boxing Club in which I’m trying to recruit new members who will potentially compete and represent SDSU. Additionally, I’m also a member of SDSU’s Tau Sigma National Honor Society.
The biggest challenge transferring to SDSU was having Imposter Syndrome. Coming from a local community college, I struggled with feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt given that I didn’t spend my first few years of college here. Additionally, I also had the preconceived notion that most of my classmates were smarter and much more talented than me in which I believed I didn’t deserve my spot to be here.
My advice to the incoming transfer students is not to be afraid to be involved with any of the student organizations and clubs that SDSU has to offer. Everyone that I’ve met here has been very accommodating and welcoming. Lastly, take advantage of the number of mentorship opportunities whether it’d be for academic, career, or personal reasons.
My favorite place to be on campus is Aztec Recreation Center (ARC) in which I enjoy practicing martial arts as a way to de-stress and
improve my overall well-being. The ENS and Group Fitness Boxing Class by Coach Sugar Ray and Coach Heidi offers an intensive workout for everyone. Alongside taking Boxing classes, I’m also enrolled in a Kickboxing Class taught by Coach Alberto and an Intermediate Jiu—Jiu-Jitsu class by Coach Kamau Jackson.
When not at the Aztec Recreation Center, my favorite place to be is the SDSU Library where I can be seen studying, doing assignments, taking a nap, eating, hanging out with friends, or relaxing.
