Message from Lisa

October is my favorite month and brings my favorite holiday, Halloween! I start at the beginning of September and deck my house out in scary adornment. I always throw a big Halloween party. The month is special too because of cooler temperatures, beautiful leaves changing color, hay rides, pumpkin carving, football, and the World Series. I would love to see your Halloween photos of you and/or your kids celebrating my favorite holiday. Click here to send them to me.

How Long Can You Receive Workers’ Compensation in North Carolina?

If you are a worker in North Carolina who has been injured on the job, you may be wondering how long you can receive workers' compensation benefits. Currently, there is a 500-week cap on weekly disability payments, unless the injured worker can demonstrate that she is entitled to extended benefits past 500 weeks. To do this, the injured worker’s attorney needs to file a request for a hearing at the 425-week mark. At hearing, the injured worker must prove that she suffers a total loss of wage-earning capacity. In other words, she must prove she is permanently and totally disabled from all types of employment and unable to earn wages.

Adnan Syed Released From Prison

Lisa chats with Jared and Katie on 107.5 KZL about Adnan Syed who is a free man (well sort of) since a judge ruled the state of Maryland violated its legal obligation to share exculpatory evidence with the defense. The case has been under scrutiny because of the award winning podcast, Serial.

Lisa's Festive Brussels Sprouts

I love brussels sprouts and make them about once a week. This is my favorite recipe for brussels and I often make this for dinner parties or holiday meals. The dates and red onions definitely level up your brussels sprouts.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb brussels sprouts, trimmed and quartered

  • 1 red onion, diced

  • ½ cup pitted dates, roughly chopped

  • 5 cloves garlic, sliced

  • 1 Tbsp. honey

  • ¼ cup balsamic vinegar

  • ¼ cup olive oil

  • 1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard

  • Sea salt, to taste

Instructions:

In a large bowl, toss your brussels

sprouts, red onion, dates, and garlic and stir together

with a large spoon.

In a smaller bowl (or a jar with a tight-fitting lid),

combine your honey, vinegar, oil, and dijon

mustard. Stir until creamy.

Pour your honey mixture into your brussels

sprouts mixture, then stir it all together with a

large spoon. Sprinkle with a small pinch of salt.

Pour your mixture onto a baking sheet, then

spread it out to form a single layer.

Place your baking sheet into the oven, then broil

until leaves of brussels sprouts begin to crisp.

Pull your baking sheet out of the oven and flip the

brussels sprouts over. Continue to broil until the

sprouts are nutty, fragrant, and tender.

Taste, and add a little extra salt if needed and then they are ready to serve.
