June means Summer is in full swing. It makes me think about spending time in the pool, trips to the beach and lake, and grilling out. It is all about family and friends and good times. Here are a few other summer pro tips from someone who loves to play in the sun all summer long. These are some of my favorites.
|
If you get a chance to visit the Outer Banks this summer, check out Outer Banks Adventures at outerbanksadventure.com for a wonderful air boat eco tour. My family loved it. The owner, Jamie, is an expert in the coastal eco system. Head down to Corolla to see the wild horses. You can get a permit to drive your four wheel drive vehicle on the beach. Coastal Cravings in Duck is a great little hole in the wall, literally in a gas station, with great food (just ask Guy Fieri). We also really like Ortega’z Southwestern Grill & Wine Bar in Manteo and Pop’s Raw Bar in Frisco. While you are in Manteo, pop in to check out the rum distillery and say hello to the guys there for me. If you are adventurous try hang gliding at Jockey’s Ridge State Park. I just did it last month and it’s a blast.

While in the Lake Lure area, check out Lured Market and Grill. This market is owned by an old classmate of mine. They have great food, wine, supplies, and live music. Give Paul a hug from me. This quaint little lake town offers a unique old school summer vacation vibe. It’s where the film, Dirty Dancing, was made. You have to visit Chimney Rock. There is a 400 foot waterfall that was featured in the Last of the Mohicans. The town of Bat Cave is adorable and has lots of shops and restaurants along the river neat the entrance to Chimney Rock.
If you can get to Asheville this summer, there are so many great places. One of my favorites is a bar called Ben’s Tune Up. As you might have guessed, it is in a former automotive shop and it’s a great place to sit outside and enjoy a beverage. Another Asheville favorite is a restaurant called Carmel’s Kitchen.

The bar is always full of locals and that is a sign of what a great spot it is. Carmel’s is located in the Grove Arcade and serves up great pizza and comfort food in a laid back atmosphere. And the bar is top notch. While in the Asheville area, check out Navitat for some really fun ziplining. And you have to visit the Pisgah Forest and spend some time tubing and chasing waterfalls. Grab some really good barbecue from Hawg Wild and then check out the famous Dolly’s Dairy Bar for some ice cream. Both are located just in the edge of the Pisgah Forest. You can rent a tube to put in the river right across the street. And you can drive into the Pisgah Forest for an easy hike to Looking Glass Falls and you can slide down the 60 foot waterfall known as Sliding Rock.
|
In the other direction, in the Ocean Isle Beach/Sunset Beach area, check out Causeway Gourmet. A pair of big city Philadelphia chefs headed South for a better life. And I am really glad they did. The Sunset Shrimp is a family favorite and they deliver to OIB and Sunset. If you are in Myrtle Beach, check out Mr. Fish. This place is literally a fish market. It’s not fancy but the fish does not get any fresher than this. If you pass through Calabash, there are the old favorites that have been around forever like Beck’s, if you just want to get in and out with a belly full of fried seafood. I really like Oyster Rock for a greater variety of seafood, more of an overall experience, beautiful water views and a full bar.
If you have little ones or grandchildren, central North Carolina offers so many awesome children’s museums. In Raleigh, Marbles is a fantastic children’s museum right in the heart of downtown. While you are downtown, don’t miss a great lunch at one of the Capital’s many great restaurants. A gourmet burger by famed chef, Ashley Christensen, from Chuck’s will not disappoint. The Morgan Street Food Hall has something for everyone, so there will be no fighting over what type of food to eat. If you like Mediterranean food, check out Taverna Agora. The upstairs outdoor seating is a paradise in the middle of downtown.
Durham has the Museum of Life and Science which is another winner with the little ones. The kids will enjoy lunch at King’s Sandwich Shop with its walk up counter. Dames Chicken and Waffles is popular spot in Durham for lunch. I really like The Refectory Café for lunch. If your kids enjoy sushi like mine do, M Sushi is a don’t miss. Durham is a foodie town. There are so many choices to check out . . . Rose’s Noodles, Cosmic Cantina, The Durham Food Hall, Pie Pushers, and Cucciolo Osteria for the very best Italian food on the planet.
Whatever you are into, get out and enjoy your Summer! I will see you out there!

Risks of a Delayed C-Section
Did you know that almost one in every three babies is delivered via C-section? They’re usually required when there’s a high risk with standard vaginal delivery. Usually, these risks are detected early on, and the doctor will schedule a C-section in advance; however, sometimes, risks arise during delivery, resulting in an emergency C-section.
Reasons for Emergency C-Sections
There are quite a few reasons for emergency C-sections. When a mother or baby displays the following, a doctor should choose to schedule an emergency C-section.
- Fetal Distress
- Umbilical Cord Issues
- Stalled Labor
Was Your Emergency C-Section Too Late?
The birth of your child is a memory you should be able to positively look back on. However, sometimes that may not be the case when negligence is involved. If you or a loved one had a delayed emergency c-section, you should contact our legal team immediately. With compassion and aggressive legal representation, we have advocated on behalf of hundreds of families, and we aren’t stopping any time soon.

Are Maternal Mortality Rates Increasing in the U.S.?
Maternal mortality refers to the number of mothers who die due to complications during their pregnancy or within six months of giving birth. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 700 women in the U.S. die from pregnancy-related complications, of which over half were preventable.
In 2020, the U.S. maternal mortality rate was 23.8 deaths per 100,000 live births, resulting in 861 deaths. For a few years now, the maternal mortality rate has been rising—2016’s maternal mortality rate was 16.9.
So, why do we have such a high maternal mortality rate? Well, the Lanier Law Group, P.A. team is here to break down the various reasons.
Factors Affecting the Maternal Mortality Rates
There have been many studies done to assess why the U.S. has such a high maternal mortality rate. Rather than finding one answer, many researchers found multiple factors that lead to our high numbers. These factors include:
- Underlying Illnesses
- Lack of Mental Health Resources
- Addiction
- Cost of Care
- Racial Disparities

Bananas Foster French Toast with Bacon Crumbles
Cook bacon ahead or use some left over from an earlier meal.
Make French Toast:
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 4 eggs
- 1/4 cup milk or half and half
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 8 slices brioche or white bread
In a small bowl, combine cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar and set aside briefly.
In a 10-inch or 12-inch skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
Whisk together cinnamon mixture, eggs, milk, and vanilla and pour into a shallow container such as a pie plate. Dip bread in egg mixture. Fry slices until golden brown, then flip to cook the other side.
Make Bananas Foster Topping:
- 1/2cup butter
- 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup maple syrup
- 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon rum extract, if desired
- 4 firm ripe medium bananas, cut into 1/2-inch slices
- Powdered sugar for dusting
In 10-inch nonstick skillet, mix butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, maple syrup and rum extract. Cook mixture over medium-high heat 2 to 3 minutes, stirring constantly with wooden spoon, until sugar dissolves and mixture is thick.
Reduce heat to medium; add bananas, gently spooning sauce over each piece. Cook about 3 minutes or until bananas are glossy and coated with sauce.
Pour banana topping over French toast and sprinkle with chopped bacon and powdered sugar.
