Message From Lisa

October is my favorite month. I love the crispness in the air and the smells and colors of Fall as the leaves begin to turn and the weather cools. I love the North Carolina State Fair that always takes place in October.

Do you know why the leaves change color? The main reason for the color change is not autumn’s chilly weather, but light—or rather, the lack of it. The green color of leaves disappears when photosynthesis (from sunlight) slows down and the chlorophyll breaks down. Trees with a lot of direct sunlight will produce red leaves, while other trees may turn yellow, orange, or brown.

October ends on my favorite holiday, Halloween! Since I was a little girl, I have absolutely loved Halloween. The origin of Halloween can be traced to the ancient Gaelic festival of Samhain, meaning Summer’s End. This festival celebrated the end of harvest time and the beginning of the “dark half” of the year. It was a seasonal marker as the ancient Celts bid good-bye to warmth and light as days got shorter.
The ancient Celts believed that the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead was at its thinnest during Samhain. This had positive benefits, as it was an ideal time to consider the dead, communicate with the deceased, and to divine the future. However, the Celts also believed that some spirits (ghosts) could pass through the wall and damage their crops. To mark the event, people would build huge bonfires to burn crops.
In later years, the Irish used hollowed-out, candlelit turnips carved with a demon’s face to frighten away spirits. When Irish immigrants in the 1840s found few turnips in the United States, they used the more plentiful pumpkins instead.

October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We all know and love people who have fought this terrible cancer. At Lanier Law Group, we have been profoundly touched by the fierce fight our own beloved, Maria has waged against breast cancer. We are thrilled to say that after a long and difficult course of treatment, she finally got to ring the bell! We love you Maria! Thank you for letting us share your journey. You are a shining example to women of the importance of screening and self-care as it saved your life.

3-Judge Panel to Review Validity of North Carolina’s SAFE Child Act

Two of Lanier Law Group, P.A.’s cases filed pursuant to the Sexual Assault Fast reporting and Enforcement Act (SAFE Child Act) have been transferred to Wake County, where a three-judge panel will review them to determine whether the SAFE Child Act is constitutional.

The defendants of both cases filed Motions to Dismiss, claiming they have a “vested” constitutional right to freedom from civil liability because the statute of limitations or repose period has expired. Thus, they allege the North Carolina SAFE Child Act is unconstitutional. On the other hand, plaintiffs assert that the constitution does not grant perpetrators of child sexual assault—or the institutions that have enabled them—a “vested” freedom. The three-judge panel will consider both parties’ briefs, then hear oral arguments this month. Read More
Boppy Pillows Led to 7 Infant Deaths, Consumer Reports Finds
A Consumer Reports (CR) analysis attributed seven recent infant deaths to the use of Boppy nursing pillows and infant loungers. This comes nearly a year after the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned against using these products for infant sleep.

Boppy pillows are intended for use while awake and supervised, CR noted. When a baby is left unattended with a Boppy pillow, they may roll over or move their head in a way that blocks their airway. This is what led to the tragic deaths of seven infants, as well as one injury. Read More

Low Country Boil
INGREDIENTS:

1/2 cup concentrated Louisiana-style shrimp and crab boil seasoning (such as Zatarain's, Old Bay, or your local favorite)

3-4 pounds small to medium red potatoes

2 to 3 medium sweet onions, such as Vidalia, peeled and quartered if large

2 1/2 pounds cured, smoked or spicy pork sausage (or chicken sausage if you prefer), cut into 1 to 3 inch pieces

8 ears of corn, cut in half

3-4 pounds medium or large shrimp, tail on

DIRECTIONS:

Fill a 7-gallon stockpot halfway with water. Add chicken bouillon corresponding to the amount of water used. Add the seasoning and bring to a rolling boil. Add the whole potatoes to the pot. Allow the water to return to a boil and cook 5 minutes. Add the onions and sausage. Bring the water back to a boil and cook 15 to 20 minutes. Add the corn, bring the water back to a boil and cook 10 minutes, or until the potatoes are done.

Add the shrimp, bring the water back to a boil and cook until the shrimp turn pink, about 3 minutes.

Drain through a colander; discard the liquid. Serve on newspaper or a platter.
