Aspen: A Sixth Grader Who Never Gives Up

In the heart of Halifax County Schools is Aspen, a student at William R. Davie Middle STEM Academy, whose journey reflects the power of support, encouragement, and unwavering belief. When you meet Aspen, one thing becomes clear—this sixth grader carries a determination that shines.

From the beginning, teachers recognized his determination. They saw a student who worked hard—even when learning took more time—and they met him with patience and support. “My teachers always help me,” he shared. “They know I can do it, but sometimes it takes me longer… I can do anything that I put my mind to.”

His teachers found creative ways to remove barriers and ensure he could succeed. “My teachers give me headphones so my work can be read out loud to me,” he said. “That way I understand it more.” That small adjustment didn’t just help him complete work; it helped him believe he could do it.

And while school can sometimes be tough, giving up has never been an option—not with the team he has behind him. His parents are his biggest encouragers, consistently reminding him to stay focused and keep pushing through challenges. “My mom and dad say I should never give up,” he shared. “They say they always got my back.”

On difficult days, he leans on those who care about him most—his teachers and his family. Talking openly about challenges has become one of his strengths. “When things feel overwhelming, I talk to my teachers or my mom and dad,” he said. “They always help me out.”

“I can do anything that I put my mind to.”

“Don’t give up!!!

I never give up!!

And nobody

gives up on me.”

And as he kept showing up and putting in the effort, something powerful happened: He saw progress. He felt growth. And he believed in himself. Looking back now, he stands proud. “I feel good. My teachers and my mom helped and I didn’t fail any grades. I’m in 6th grade now.”

This year, he’s working to master cursive writing and improve his soccer skills. Some days, the letters don’t look quite right, but he keeps going. When he’s playing soccer, his confidence shines brightest. “Playing soccer makes me feel confident,” he said. “I feel confident when I'm running down the field and no one can catch me… it’s ’cause I’m too fast.” Whether he is practicing cursive or working to improve in soccer, he works hard and refuses to quit.

Now, Aspen hopes to inspire other students the same way others have inspired him. His message is simple, powerful, and from the heart: “Don’t give up!!! I never give up!! And nobody gives up on me.”
