Transgender Insurance Exclusions Lifted in Maryland

An exclusion in health coverage provided by CareFirst, Maryland's largest health insurance provider, and Maryland Medical Assistance, Maryland's Medicaid program, has been lifted.

The exclusion " previously denied coverage for any "treatment leading to or in connection with transsexualism, or sex changes or modifications, including but not limited to surgery."

The change, announced November 19th,  was facilitated by FreeState Legal, "the civil legal aid organization that works on behalf of low-income LGBT Marylanders".

The new policy will take effect on January 1, 2016. Current policyholders will see the change "occur upon the date that the health plan is renewed."
