Rider Survey Report Receives Wide Media Coverage

Over the last month, Bike Santa Cruz County's 2025 Rider Survey Report was featured in several local media outlets. Lookout Santa Cruz highlighted our result that only two percent of cyclists feel very safe, and 89 percent saw or experienced a crash or near-miss in the past year. They used our data to name Soquel Avenue, Mission Street, Capitola Road, River Street, and Water Street as high-risk areas that need attention from the local governments.

RTC Cuts Ribbon on Chanticleer Bicycle/Pedestrian Overcrossing

RTC cut the ribbon on the latest piece of cycling infrastructure in Santa Cruz County at a July 30th event.

The Chanticleer Bicycle/Pedestrian Overcrossing, nicknamed the "Whale Bridge," provides safe passage from Live Oak and coastal neighborhoods to Soquel Drive health care facilities and businesses. It enables cyclists and pedestrians to avoid two dangerous interchanges: Soquel Drive/Highway 1 and 41st Avenue/Highway 1. This critical improvement is expected to enable and attract more people to use bicycles to access important mid-county facilities, and builds upon the active transportation network we at BSCC envision and advocate for throughout Santa Cruz County.

Thanks to all who came out to show support and volunteer at our Bike Valet at this special event!

SafeTREC

The UC Berkeley Safe Transportation Research and Education Center has released a video, linked here, that summarizes the three ways we can make our roads safe for cyclists and pedestrians. Entitled Traffic safety explained in 101 seconds, the Center plans to use a tool to encourage local governments to address safety issues in our increasingly dangerous roadway system. More information about SafeTREC here.

The three best ways to save lives on our road system? 1. reduce speeds, 2. drive less, 3. implement systemic land use change.
