Watsonville Community Bike Rides

Bike Santa Cruz County successfully organized two Watsonville Community Rides on April 13th and May 25th, drawing over 120 participants. The events featured helmet and safety gear giveaways, along with educational materials on the benefits of biking and bike safety. Participants enjoyed the rides and expressed enthusiasm for future events. Thanks to all of our partners and volunteers for making these events so successful!

Segment 7B Rail Trail Ribbon Cutting

Segment 7B completes the Rail Trail from the mouth of the San Lorenzo River to Natural Bridges. It is a 0.8-mile-long paved bicycle and pedestrian path between Bay Street/California Street and Pacific Avenue/Beach Street. The Ribbon Cutting on May 21st was a festive atmosphere including local organizations, government, Bayview Elementary School students who walked the trail, and even the Roaring Camp train was there.

Volunteer News

On May 18th, Bike Santa Cruz County recently hosted the Bike Valet at the Kuumbwa Jazz 50th Anniversary event in San Lorenzo Park. We parked over 130 bikes and folks were very stoked to have a safe place to leave their bikes during the music and festivities!

Our events are volunteer driven - we can't do it without your help! Please consider volunteering for a Bike Valet shift for our next event, this weekend on Saturday, June 7th - National Dig Day Afterparty at Woodhouse Blending and Brewing!

Green Fondo Wrap Up

Team Bike Santa Cruz County's Green Fondo 2025 event is officially in the books. For two days in May, twenty-nine cyclists pedaled the hills, valleys and coastlines of Marin and Sonoma counties as part of the Climate Ride-sponsored event. The team camped at the Walker Creek Conference Center in a picturesque valley near Tomales Bay.  The team raised over $18,000 for BSCC, one of over 100 certified beneficiary organizations recognized by Climate Ride. These funds will power our advocacy and education programs as well as our community events in the coming year.

Our friends at Climate Ride remind us that they produce cycling adventures all year long, all around the globe.  And all of them fund carbon-reduction focussed non-profits.

From the entire Board of Directors and Bike Santa Cruz County, THANK YOU Green Fondo Riders!

Help Restore the Active Transportation Plan

In the budget crunch in 2024, the governor chose to cut the tiny, underfunded Active Transportation Program (ATP) despite an influx of federal funding to fill out California’s transportation budget. The ATP funds dozens of biking and walking infrastructure projects across California. Because of these cuts, the latest cycle was able to give grants to just 13 projects.

Bike Santa Cruz County is joining CalBike and statewide allies in a campaign to restore the $400 million promised to the ATP that was clawed back. This will allow California communities to build safe, connected bikeways, enhanced sidewalks and intersections, and many other Complete Streets projects that make our shared roadways safer for everyone, especially people not traveling by car.

Please join us in demanding that our elected leaders spend our state funds on priorities that benefit California: climate-friendly transportation that builds healthy, prosperous neighborhoods.

Chanticleer Bicycle/Pedestrian Overcrossing Near Completion

Opening Soon! The Chanticleer Bicycle/Pedestrian Overcrossing is nearing completion. We are looking forward to opening this amazing facility for the community to enjoy soon. Crews are finishing up the final construction elements to ensure the bridge is safe and ready for everyone to use.

Although work may seem to have stopped on the project, in fact, there has been work overnight for many nights to facilitate the timely completion of the project. In addition, the work to tie in the asphalt concrete pavement around the Chanticleer bridge landing at Soquel Avenue and Chanticleer Avenue had to be re-verified based on actual elevations encountered during construction for road cross slopes and drainage. Design verification work is almost complete to ensure taking into consideration all of these elements.

The RTC anticipates the pedestrian bridge opening in the next few weeks, so stay tuned! And don’t forget to Save the Date for the official ribbon cutting ceremony after that on July 30.
