Mountaintop experiences are layered experiences. If it is a clear day, there is the ability to take in views for miles on end. Depending on where this mountaintop is located, the peak may be calm and quiet, away from the bustle of daily life taking place at the mountain's base. Depending on the experience, mountaintop sensations do not last forever. Who would tell the story of the sights, smells, and sounds if no one ever returned from the pinnacle? If this is in the context of a journey, there is the ability to see where to go next, what dangers may be in a path, what resources are available to sustain life, and to notice if there has been a path already trodden by those who have journeyed before.
On this final weekend of Epiphany, Transfiguration Sunday, we are witness to a wondrous mountaintop experience with Jesus and his disciples. We are witness to God's creativity in revealing Jesus' not just to the disciples but also to us. God reminds us of previous mountaintops, previous relationships from those pinnacles, and previous voices "crying in the wilderness." What a creative story God tells us through this mountaintop scene, showing us who God is throughout the course of history, and also today.
This creativity of God in the person of Jesus does not end. God continues God's creative nature to reach out to us today through the moves of the Holy Spirit. Over the waters of baptism. In the profound nature of Holy Communion. We are also made to be creative beings on a journey. How do we come down from the mountaintop? What do we do with this holy creativity that has been gifted to us?

Prairie Avenue Christian Church became a Stephen Ministries congregation in 2017. Beginning on Sunday, February 28, at 10:30 am in the Sunshine Classroom, we will offer the training course. This training will be led by Pastor Jason, a trained Stephen Leader, and will include a variety of topics such as listening, Christian assertiveness, maintaining boundaries in caregiving, and grief.
Think and pray about this opportunity. If you decide you would like to be a Stephen Minister, please contact Pastor Jason to talk about how you can get started. You will also grow spiritually when you serve as a Stephen Minister. When God calls you to service, he also gives you the faith and the gifts you need to do his will.

DETROIT MISSION TRIP OPPORTUNITIES
July 27-August 1
August 1-5
|
SLAM (Service, Learning, Advocacy, and Missions) is offering an opportunity to make a difference in people's lives!
The group is organizing two mission trips to Detroit. The purpose is to assist people with home repairs and improvements and yard work. We are partnering with Rippling Hope Ministry.
Rippling Hope Ministry was founded in 2011 by Carl and Robin Zerwick. Carl is a Disciples of Christ minister. This missional ministry has helped over 2500 homeowners in the painting of homes and garages, new handicap ramps, installed or repaired door locks, built new or repair porches and stairs, boarding up abandoned homes, and cleaned unkempt lots.
The workday begins with an assignment and providing the necessary materials and tools needed for the project. Work begins no later than 9 am and concludes between 3:30 to 4:30 pm. Following supper, participants can relax or socialize in Detroit. Devotions conclude the day.
The cost is $180 per person. Meals and lodgings provided. No skills are required, and you are not expected to provide tools or equipment. Minors can attend with adult supervision.
Scholarships are available. The registration deadline is April 1.
Contact Bill Kerns at 217-824-8181 for questions.

"I think we've got to make our connections, we've got to make the ways in which we gather essential, a priority, and then do the learning, get equipped, overcome, and take on our identity so that we can overcome the destruction that has prevented us from honoring God." - Rev. Yvonne Gilmore
General Minister and President Terri Hord Owens invites you to imagine a future church as she talks with Interim Administrative Secretary of the National Convocation, Rev. Yvonne Gilmore.
