Did you miss a sermon or can't remember the good statement made by Pastor Jason recently?

What do we know about Corinth, the place where Paul founded one of the early church communities? Well, it was a cosmopolitan place, composed of people from various ethnic backgrounds, lifestyles, and religious beliefs. It was also a seaport, making it a valuable site for trade and commerce. Corinth was, in many ways, a model city in the Roman Empire. It was also known for its significant slave trade, sexual perversion, and general moral corruption. At first glance, it hardly seems like the ideal setting for a new church. But what does Paul do? Plant a church in Corinth.
You can imagine that Paul is thoroughly aware of the various cultural influences that might impact this fledgling community. The members of the Corinthian church would have come from varied backgrounds and experiences, different social norms and values. Such differences can be a challenge for a new community trying to agree on common practices and commitments. In this passage from his Second Letter to the Corinthians, Paul uses language and images that reflect tensions of difference and paradox: light in the midst of darkness, treasure in clay jars, perseverance despite persecution, life that surpasses the work of death. He highlights an important reality: we do not preach ourselves: we preach Jesus Christ as Lord. That knowledge enables us to deal with the tensions of difference and paradox that arise in our lives.

Imagine with Me: North American Pacific/Asian Disciples
|
"Many times we say about the covenant, only covenant for the denomination or something, but we have to remember that we have a covenant as a Christian and we have a covenant as a brother and sister in Christ. That's the first thing. People feel that and when they find that important aspect in our church, people will come." - Rev. Chung Seong Kim, executive pastor for North American Pacific/Asian Disciples
Rev. Terri Hord Owens talks with the executive pastor for North American Pacific/Asian Disciples (NAPAD), Rev. Chung Seong Kim about the ways congregations in his community are living out the Pentecost story of inclusiveness and growth.
